love is love is love

Hi internets, can you keep a secret? It’s just a little teeny, tiny one, and it’s not really a secret at all.

Okay good, I’m glad I can trust you with my not-a-secret.

Andrew and I got married today.

No, no, today wasn’t our wedding day (duh, don’t you know there is a difference?). But according to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, we are now husband and wife.

On our lunch hour, dressed in jeans (him) and sexy red shoes (me), in a small, mildewy, basement law office adorned with lots of avian-themed art, a cute old lawyer (first name: Fitzhugh) married us. We exchanged vows but not rings. Andrew kissed his bride.

It was so simple and lighthearted that I couldn’t help but feel like we were pulling a prank. We celebrated with a Frosty from Wendy’s and then I went back to the office!

Honestly, this is just what we wanted. We didn’t want the stateside legalities to take away from the specialness or the anticipation of our real wedding. We didn’t want any celebration or fanfare today. We just wanted to take care of the paperwork and enjoy it for what it was. And it gave us an excuse to spend a long lunch hour together acting like googly-eyed lovebirds.

Our real wedding will happen when we stand in front of friends and family and say our vows and exchange our rings. That is when we will be married in our hearts.

P.S. Andrew and I feel strongly that two loving adults should be allowed to do just what we did today: ask the state to recognize our union. Eight states have a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage on the ballot this year and election day is less than 2 weeks away. Vote for love and equality, not discrimination!

Congratulations! How sweet. You’re an adorable couple. (And really, is there ever a better way to celebrate anything than with a Frosty? Me thinks not.) (Okay well maybe something with wine, but you sure can’t find good wine for 99 cents so…yeah. Frosty!)

And thank you for reminding people not to be discriminatory in their voting in November. Here in VA, it’s already illegal for a same-sex couple to be married, but there’s an amendment to the state constitution that we will be voting on that just “cements” it in there. WTF? Can’t those jerks be happy enough that it’s already not legal? Why kick someone when they’re down? Gah.

(Sidenote: one other amendment we’re voting on says “This was determined to be unconstitutional. So can we have your permission to take it out of the constitution now?” Oh my god, are they serious??)

    Congratulations!!!

And I totally agree! Luckily in MN, we are gaining on the once leading republicans in the Polls, so we just have to hold on to that for a few more weeks!!!

Congratulations! You’re “official” (officially not quite official!) I’m afraid the state of Texas is a LONG way from allowing any love is love is love marriages. But we can dream….

    Yeah! Congrats.

And I couldn’t agree more. If you are lucky enough to find it, why not let everyone celebrate it – love is special, no matter what form it takes.

Congrats again, and best of luck in a few weeks, the day I will always celebrate with you (11/11)! ;)

What a fun post. And so surprising. And so sweet. I love the picture and I love that you celebrated with a Frosty. That, my friend, is true love.

Yeah! Love! Many congratulations to you both! PS. Must say that in comparing that picture to the one in your profile, you look noticeably trimmed-down. The running, she works, no? You Go!

Congratulations!! And I really, can’t think of anything better to mark the occasion than a Frosty. (Except maybe a McGriddle’s breakfast sandwich.)

AS has been trying to convince me to consider buying a house in an adorable little town called Cranford, New Jersey for over a year. After yesterday’s ruling, we just might! :)

Matt wants to know what date you will celebrate, the marriage date or the wedding date… I said the wedding date and he wondered if that’s because you are “churchy.”

There is no better way than to say “I do” than in red sexy shoes! Congratulations.

Okay – yes, pretty white dress helps but under the circumstances you know what I mean!

    Congrats almost bride!
