love is love is love

Hi internets, can you keep a secret? It’s just a little teeny, tiny one, and it’s not really a secret at all.

Okay good, I’m glad I can trust you with my not-a-secret.

Andrew and I got married today.

No, no, today wasn’t our wedding day (duh, don’t you know there is a difference?). But according to the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, we are now husband and wife.

On our lunch hour, dressed in jeans (him) and sexy red shoes (me), in a small, mildewy, basement law office adorned with lots of avian-themed art, a cute old lawyer (first name: Fitzhugh) married us. We exchanged vows but not rings. Andrew kissed his bride.

It was so simple and lighthearted that I couldn’t help but feel like we were pulling a prank. We celebrated with a Frosty from Wendy’s and then I went back to the office!

Honestly, this is just what we wanted. We didn’t want the stateside legalities to take away from the specialness or the anticipation of our real wedding. We didn’t want any celebration or fanfare today. We just wanted to take care of the paperwork and enjoy it for what it was. And it gave us an excuse to spend a long lunch hour together acting like googly-eyed lovebirds.

Our real wedding will happen when we stand in front of friends and family and say our vows and exchange our rings. That is when we will be married in our hearts.

P.S. Andrew and I feel strongly that two loving adults should be allowed to do just what we did today: ask the state to recognize our union. Eight states have a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage on the ballot this year and election day is less than 2 weeks away. Vote for love and equality, not discrimination!

  1. You two look so ADORABLE! And so married! Was that the best lunch you’ve ever had or what?

  2. Congratulations in a totally non-celebratory, non-fanfarey way!

    You guys are very cute.

  3. YAY! Congratulations!

  4. Congratulations! :)

  5. What a perfect little celebration for two politicos :)

And yea for you and your sexy red shoes! Congratulations!!

  6. Congratulations!! You guys are both gorgeous, and very lucky. :)

And who can go wrong with sexy red shoes?

  7. Gah! Ate my comment – I hope this doesn’t come up twice, but if it does? DOUBLE congrats!

  8. Congratulations! How sweet. You’re an adorable couple. (And really, is there ever a better way to celebrate anything than with a Frosty? Me thinks not.) (Okay well maybe something with wine, but you sure can’t find good wine for 99 cents so…yeah. Frosty!)

And thank you for reminding people not to be discriminatory in their voting in November. Here in VA, it’s already illegal for a same-sex couple to be married, but there’s an amendment to the state constitution that we will be voting on that just “cements” it in there. WTF? Can’t those jerks be happy enough that it’s already not legal? Why kick someone when they’re down? Gah.

(Sidenote: one other amendment we’re voting on says “This was determined to be unconstitutional. So can we have your permission to take it out of the constitution now?” Oh my god, are they serious??)

  9. Congratulations!!!

And I totally agree! Luckily in MN, we are gaining on the once leading republicans in the Polls, so we just have to hold on to that for a few more weeks!!!

  10. Congratulations!! It’s so ROMANTIC! That picture should be in your album with all the fancy ones. And…Great tie-in! I’ve already voted no on my absentee ballot.

  11. Congratulations to you both – love your blog!

  12. Congratulations! You’re “official” (officially not quite official!) I’m afraid the state of Texas is a LONG way from allowing any love is love is love marriages. But we can dream….

  13. Mazel tov! I think that’s the sweetest story and picture!
    love you both!

I can’t believe CA isn’t a love is love state. Pisses me off!

  14. Hurray!

  15. Congrats! That picture is adorable. You both look so happy. And props to you for thinking about others on your not-wedding day. I couldn’t agree with you more.

  16. I don’t have anything new to add. Just congrats!

  17. Yeah! Congrats.

And I couldn’t agree more. If you are lucky enough to find it, why not let everyone celebrate it – love is special, no matter what form it takes.

Congrats again, and best of luck in a few weeks, the day I will always celebrate with you (11/11)! ;)

  18. Congratulations! Mazel Tov! How does it feel to be married?

Let me say that what you posted about the elections, and love is love, etc.: YOU GO GIRL!!!! Right on target! Freakin’ republicans…I’m in Virginia and I vote!

  19. What a fun post. And so surprising. And so sweet. I love the picture and I love that you celebrated with a Frosty. That, my friend, is true love.

(I am now even more excited for the wedding in Mexico!)

  20. Yeah! Love! Many congratulations to you both! PS. Must say that in comparing that picture to the one in your profile, you look noticeably trimmed-down. The running, she works, no? You Go!

  21. Congratulations!! And I really, can’t think of anything better to mark the occasion than a Frosty. (Except maybe a McGriddle’s breakfast sandwich.)

AS has been trying to convince me to consider buying a house in an adorable little town called Cranford, New Jersey for over a year. After yesterday’s ruling, we just might! :)

  22. CONGRATS! So happy for you both.

And here here for civil unions!

  23. Oh, congrats! So will you celebrate your anniversary on Oct 25th or on the upcoming date?

Sounds like you guys are so perfect together!!

  24. Janet, I am so happy for you. And when I vote in Virginia I will definitely vote against the amendment. I agree with you. XOXO

  25. Congratulations! What a joyous day.

  26. Congratulations! What a romantic way to celebrate your love for each other. And what a cute picture!!!

  27. Amen to that! And congratulations!!!

  28. Sweet! Congratulations.

  29. Awwww…and what cute lovebirds you two are. That’s awesome…congrats! :)

  30. Congratulations!

  31. Matt wants to know what date you will celebrate, the marriage date or the wedding date… I said the wedding date and he wondered if that’s because you are “churchy.”

  34. There is no better way than to say “I do” than in red sexy shoes! Congratulations.

Okay – yes, pretty white dress helps but under the circumstances you know what I mean!

    Congrats almost bride!

  35. Congrats!

  36. [...] So after a month-long hiatus, that was only coincidently the same month that I decided to shoot myself in the foot post every day, Longball and I have resumed diplomatic talks.  Much in the same way that Janet and Andrew celebrated their marriage with a Frosty, Longball and I decided to rekindle the romance by going to Bucca di Beppos.  [...]
