moving sucks

Now I remember why we haven’t moved in more than three years. It sucks! I thought I was ready for this — I got rid of a bunch of stuff at that yard sale a few months ago and I didn’t open most of our wedding presents yet so I wouldn’t have to pack them up again, but still, we have a lot of stuff!

Things I really should be taking care of:

  • Buying or otherwise acquiring boxes
  • Systematically packing and labeling all of our stuff
  • Reserving a rental truck
  • Winning the lottery so I can afford to hire movers
  • Selling unwanted items on craigslist
  • Talking to the utility companies about transferring services

Things I am doing instead:

  • Shopping for furniture online
  • Dreamily gazing at my paint samples
  • Watching the MTV video music awards (even though they are numbingly boring so far)
  • Washing dishes by hand for the four zillionth time because our mother-freaking dishwasher is broken, AGAIN
  • Eating enough chocolate chips (for the next two weeks) to give my body the energy it needs for hauling a lot of boxes and furniture without the help of professional movers
  • Making scale diagrams of possible arrangements for hypothetical furniture that we have not yet bought nor can we afford to buy anytime soon. (But when the time comes, I will have architectural-like drawings!)
  • Sorting through toiletries (in the name of packing) and realizing that damn, I have a lot of lotions for a girl who lives in a humid climate
  • Wondering why performers on MTV don’t even bother pretending to lip-sync anymore

  1. The VMA’s haven’t started here yet…but I am SO nervous for Britney’s performance. :)

    And yes…packing SUCKS!

  2. OMG – Did you see the trainwreak that is Britney? I really wanted her to rock it tonigt but instead she just bomb! She looked like a deer in headlights and almost fell 2-3 times.

  3. moving is a good excuse to go to the liquor store. there are so many sturdy boxes.

  4. I shouldn’t give you this, because it was a source of MAJOR procrastination for me, but….. check out http://www.bassettfurniture.com/tools/room-planner.asp. You can virtually plan your rooms and move furniture and even print out the layout for your movers so they know where to put everything. (The only bummer is they will call you a nerd – mine did!).

  5. dood, i’m totally with you on the MTV stuff. sadly, however, i missed britney. :(

  6. *sigh* I wanted to see Brit Brit.

  7. I fear our next move. I love getting a fresh start in a new place and having an excuse to go through all our stuff and purge what we don’t need anymore… but moving still sucks. We’ve accumulated so much stuff since our last move that I think we’ll just have to stay here forever.

  8. It’s weird – I love helping other people move because I like to see their new digs before it gets all broken in, but I hate doing it myself. The packing, the labeling, the boxing. Ugh. The worst part is that you can’t just Saran-wrap your whole house and drop it somewhere else because you need things like towels and tissues and shampoo and Sharpies until the very end so there’s all this random stuff that is bound to be lost the second you need it in your new place. So annoying!

    Uh, anyway, have fun…!

  9. Were you as disappointed in Brit’s performance as I was, and ultimately, the rest of the world?

  10. Check the Craigslist free section for moving boxes. People give them away ALL the time.

  11. Moving DOES suck. I shudder in fear. You definitely deserve a massage / pedicure / cupcake / all of the above.

I’m really worried about our pal, Britney. I think she’s lost her mojo!

  12. Hey, I have a great idea. For those of us who didn’t get to watch the MTV VMAs, how about a Britney performance recap, Janet-style? It would be fun to read, and even more importantly, another procrastination source for you! Because yes, moving sucks.

  13. Before we bought our house, we moved five times. And all without professional movers. Of course, we had friends help us, and my poor Dad who swears he will never help another kid move again (famous last words!). But, yeah, I feel ya. Moving is a pain. Especially boxes full of books. The worst! But think how much fun you will have! Owning your own home and decorating it and being able to paint! It is lovely, even if it is a tad stressful sometimes. I’m getting ready to repaint, myself. It’s been two years and I’m ready for a color change. Oh, and I totally do the architectural drawings, too! I love to do that. I have a bunch of drawings on grid paper for when the time comes to remodel our kitchen. Such fun!

  14. That is one of the few good things about the military–yes, you move a LOT, but at least they pay for movers to come do the hard part for you!

And oh, the VMA’s… I turned it off after Brit’s performance–I already felt waaaay too old.

  15. Yup. The VMAs sucked. I may have flipped the channel to “the pick-up artist” and was vastly more entertained. Good luck with the moving. My advice is not to hire anyone off Craigs List. Very, very sketchy and they may be packing, shall we say, heat.

  16. Without a doubt moving sucks. I specifically bought my place so that I could maximize the amount of time before I would have to move (2BR instead of 1, 2 bathrooms, 2 parking spots..). That way I am covered for quite some time.

  17. I hate moving. We’ve done it way too many times. You should seriously consider movers. I swear it saved our marriage.
And … Britney sucked. I felt sorry for her. And then Sarah Silverman after – ouch!

  18. You are funny. Moving can be bearable, but only if YOU plan. Organizing things into boxes is fun if done in advance. Too bad I’m not coming back in, I could help.

Go to the liquor store in Woodley to get some boxes.
Recruit Andrew’s nerdy friends to haul things outta there!
Sit back with a mojito and be happy you planned ahead.
