gin and ironic
March 10th, 2008 @ 5:51 pm | blonde moments | Post a CommentGo rummage through your storage bins from the 1990s and dig out your Alanis Morissette CD while I tell you the fastest way to get a flooded social calendar: Declare to the internets that you are going to spend three weeks slaving away inside your home. Trust me, the social engagements will come out of nowhere and foil your well-intentioned nesting plans.
For example:
Wednesday: Project Runway girls night, as we discussed previously.
Thursday: Dinner and drinks with lovely ladies from my college sorority. We are quite old and boring compared to our crazy New Orleans days but it’s still fun to get together and remember that one time so-and-so puked in the bushes/on her date/all over the cab. Good times.
Friday: Discovered best dive bar ever in our neighborhood. They serve buffalo chicken cheesesteaks (for the hubby, I don’t eat moldy cheese, thanksmuch) and stock their tables with board/card games. What could be better than hefeweizen and a mean game of Hearts at your local bar?
Saturday: Went out for Indian food and ice cream with friends who are having a baby. Dude, it was the baby who made me eat so much! Sympathy hunger, I swear.
Sunday: Finally! Paid attention to the house. Attempted to paint the bedroom for the 3rd time, only to stop because I’m still not sure the color is right. Just kill me now, please. Or, shall I kill you with boredom by telling you my woeful tale of trying to find the right shade of gray. Or “greige” as the cool kids call it these days. (Gray + Beige = Greige). Woe. I know. I’ll spare you this time.
So I know I’ve been delinquent on the house and my 21 Day Makeover, but I’ve been out there having fun instead, so I don’t feel too bad about it. I’m starting to feel like every other blog post is about how I don’t do what I say I’m going to do (welcome to my life) so I am just going to declare right now that I am trying to get really fat, I never want to take another vacation again, and I definitely, definitely do NOT want to win the lottery.
Okay, Universe. I’m ready for you to go and bash those plans. Any day now.

that bar sounds fabulous. I love any bar where you can play games and not worry about being judged.

I think having fun and going out is definitely a nice exception from the 21 day pledge.
Sounds like a fabulous weekend!

I think it’s important to have goals, but you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you don’t meet every single one perfectly. What matters is that you’re really trying and getting things done while also maintain a healthy and active social life. I say more power to you!

That bar sounds like a keeper! It’s always good to have a go-to place for low-key fun.

Since I am not a cool kid, I’m glad to know the new lingo. I would have said grey + beige = taupe. So, now I’m confused. What is taupe?

All that stuff sounds very fun!
Maybe you should just spin around and point at a color with your eyes closed for the bedroom at this point!

Being popular is really difficult, it’s true.
You’ll get to the house… even if it ends up being a 41-day makeover!

Which bar is that? I’ll have to check it out! I’ve been having the same social calendar woes–and between my job, my writing, a collaborative website I’m working on with two online friends, my husband, and keeping the laundry done, I haven’t had time to keep up with much of anything. Oh well–what matters is the intention, right?

If it makes you feel better, I haven’t worked out in what seems like a week for lesser reasons than yours. That’s why I made an appointment with a personal trainer this week. I need someone to keep me focused. Maybe you need to hire a maid/organizer/handyman to keep you on track? I know, if only the world were made of money!

I can absolutely relate to this post; I’m full of great ideas and not so full of the great follow-thu. Sigh.

I just found your blog from Jen at Jaysel, and now I fear I’m hooked
Anyway, I LOVE dive bars. They are so much better than huge clubs with nothing fun to do but dance with sketchy people.
Also, my sister went to school in New Orleans. I’ve heard some disturbing Mardi Gras week stories eerily similar to those you mentioned…

I think you’re absolutely right, of course — you need to be living your life and doing what makes you happy. It’s good to challenge yourself, but if you’re going to be miserable while working on your house (because your husband and friends are out having fun without you), how fun would that be? You’ll get back to the house-stuff once the social-stuff dissipates a little.

Jagged Little Pill * might * have been the very first CD I ever bought, ever. You know, hypothetically.
