monday: my not-so-secret obsession

Clearly I am sucking at blogging. So perhaps I should try something new. This week, I will post something every night, even if it is short, silly, pointless, humorless, and generally lacking any merit whatsoever.

Do you want to know where I’ve been lurking? At the Baby Name Wizard blog, especially the comments section. It seems that no matter how un-pregnant I am and shall remain, I can’t stop loving names. Yes, I just said that. I love NAMES.

Gahhh, perhaps should not have re-commenced blogging after all.

Here are my favorites right now.

Girls:

  • Elle (or any name with this in it, such as Joelle)
  • Cora (the movie Coralie inspired this, even though I haven’t seen it yet)
  • Katherine/Katharine
  • Juliet
  • Annika/Annie

Boys: (a much more contentious topic in household hypothetical discussions)

  • Barton, no nickname
  • Edward, nickname Teddy/Ted
  • Wesley
  • Wyatt
  • Sidney
  • middle name: West (but not with a W first name)

If this post makes you want to stick a fork in your eyeballs (I’m talking to you, husband), then come back tomorrow. Maybe I’ll post a recipe or an outfit or something.

However, we’ve had some fun times with this topic before. I am laughing out loud reading the old comments right now. Please note that Magnus is off my new list, despite the recent discovery that Andrew’s great-great grandfather was named….(wait for it….)….. MAGNUS MAGNUSEN. It doesn’t get better, or more Scandanavian, than that.

  1. Those are great names! I, too, love names, and even though I don’t really want kids, I do have a list of names written down JUST IN CASE. I like classic “romantic” names, like Elizabeth, Charlotte, and some others that I guess I don’t like as much as I thought I did because I can’t even think of them right now!

(Don’t worry about not blogging regularly…we all love you and will keep reading no matter how sporadically you post! I, on the other hand, have pretty much given up the blog thing again. I really have nothing to say, and no one would read it at this point anyway!)

  2. I have a boy’s name and had a dream recently that I was pregnant and was quite decided on that name. But in the dream, I couldn’t decide on a girl’s name and I was pretty sure I was having a girl. So I was quite troubled.

I have yet to hear a girl’s name that I just adore and that hasn’t already been taken by relatives. Example: Love the name Alyssa, but niece’s name is Hollissa. No can do.

Ah the woes of marrying a man who is the baby of the family and therefore, the last to have children. All the good names are gone!

  3. Why do I feel like Laurel also had a Magnus Magnusen in her family???
    :)

I am really a fan of your name choices and I have been trying to figure out how you can make a career of choosing names. You should be a baby name choosing consultant…

  4. My niece’s name is Cora Evelyn and I LOVE her name! I’m with you on liking the more feminine names for girls (for me it’s because I grew up with an androgynous name). My other favorites (for both boys and girls) are SO out there, and although hubby has been (cajoled and) convinced on two of them, the others are constantly poo-poohed. Here’s my list: Soren, Augustus, Idris (for boys); Aletheia, Evadne (for girls). Can you guess which two my husband has ok’d? Probably not, since they’re all WEIRD!

  5. My husband’s full name is Barton (only a million gazillion times better than Bartholomew).

  6. Hahah Magnus Magnusen. That’s just as good as the boy I dated when I was younger, Ruben Rubinoff. What were their parents thinking??

  7. For some inexplicable reason I’ve always loved the name Ellemosynary for a girl–Ella-moss-a-nary–calling her Elle or Ella for short. (Ellemosynary means “Charitable”)

Admittedly, this is the only girl name that I like. But I don’t know if I could justify naming a child such a looooong name, perhaps a pet?

Great list! Also, I am soooo very excited for outfits, recipies, and/or celebrity iPhone pics!! Miss you!

  8. I think that was one of the first posts I read on your blog!

I just found a list of names I had written down a long time ago. Most of them I would never use anymore!

  9. I am totally addicted to baby names and swistle’s baby name blog.

  10. i am totally obsessed with names too. and i am very very unpregnant as well, so don’t fret. and i like west as a middle name too, very classicish.

  11. The world always needs more women named Olivia, or Sydney, or Nina.

  12. Is Heidikins kidding? Dude, that’s one crazy name.

  13. You spelled grandpa’s name wrong – it’s Magnus Magnusson. And, yes, he was the world’s strongest man.

  14. On the day Kennedy was born I randomly decided that I had to name her Juliet. Well, I guess you can figure out how that turned out…

  15. Um, I commented on this yesterday…? Did my comment get deleted for some reason? You hated the names I wrote about? Hmmm…

  16. I like Juliet. And Teddy.

I play this game too with no concrete baby plans. Today I considered “Livingston” for a boy name.

  17. I am still not convinced that A- bart is a bad nickname and B- people with not call him that.

    Love your lists!
