five years

Holy crap. I just looked at the date and realized that one year ago today was the last day of my old job. And oddly enough, five years ago today was my first day at that same job. (Random coincidence; it would be impossible to plan such things.) My first day at that job was also the first day I officially lived in Washington, DC.

When we first moved here, I wanted to be on a “five year plan” to be gone again. I’ve always wanted to move back to Denver. Now I seem both more solidly here (own a house) and yet even more ready to move away. Maybe in a few more years.

Amazing how much can change in five years. Officially moved in together. Got a kitten. First real adult job. Andrew had several jobs (the joys of campaign life) and finally found a “career.” We got engaged, then married. Bought a house. Wrecked our new car. I got a new job. I’ve been there almost a year now.

So yes, I’m being cheesy and nostalgic. It makes me realize that we can accomplish A LOT in another five years. Maybe babies, maybe moving to Colorado. Maybe FIVE trips to Italy. (Okay, maybe not. Likely not.) All I can ask is to be happy and healthy, in love with my husband, and close to family and friends.

How much has your life changed since May 27, 2004?

  1. I was a little more then a month from getting married 5 years ago. Since then I’m married, quit my career, moved to Colorado, became a Mom, and am about to become a Mom of two soon!

  2. Let’s see…5 years ago was my 22 birthday. I was newly single, living with two roomates, interning at the place I work now. Since then I got a real job, met my now-husband, moved in together, bought a new car, got engaged, bought a house, got married, got a puppy who is now a 90 lbs ball of fur, received 4 promotions, took my first, second, third, and fourth trips out of the country, and just celebrated my 27th birthday with friends and a surprise visit from my husband (who was 3 1/2 hours out of town and came in just for the night).

Wow, a lot has happened when I think about it. Wonder what the next 5 years will bring?

  3. Wow, this is crazy to think about. I graduated from college, got engaged, moved into my first apartment, landed my first job, got married, bought a house, got a dog, and found a new job. YIKES. However, most of that was in 2005; life has been relatively calm since then. :)

  4. I was still in College…. Living on campus….
    And not even 21 yet.
    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  5. Wow – 5 years DOES encompass a lot of stuff! I was a year away from graduating from law school, probably en route to SC for a summer with my sister (oh yeah, and an internship). Since then I’ve graduated, moved to DC, met my now-husband, moved in with my husband, been to New Zealand and twice to England, acquired two cats, gotten married, been to countless orchestra concerts and learned more than I ever thought I would about classical music. And the immediate future holds a search for our first home and very serious contemplation of a first baby. Wow indeed!

  6. I feel like I’m in exactly the same place. Same apartment, same relationship, same hatred of going to work, same love handles….sigh.

    xox

  7. I was just thinking about this the other day. A LOT has changed in our last 5 years that’s for sure! Makes me both excited and scared for the next 5 years. hehe

  8. I have to throw it out there – 5 years ago, I had a newborn and I was a new mom still learning the ropes of being a parent! Now I am the mom of 2 boys, one “graduating” preschool for kindergarten in the fall. Five years, a blink, but so much can change during that time…

  9. That is certainly a lot of changes in five years! I like to periodically think back on all the things I’ve done in a particular time period, too. :)

  10. 5 years ago, my youngest child was only 6 months old. Now, I have 3 kids. I don’t know what the next 5 years brings, but I know it’s not going to bring any more babies. heh.

  11. I was a newlywed! Now, 5 years later, we own a house, have a new dog, both have new jobs and… a baby on the way!!! It truly is amazing what can be accomplished in 5 years…what adventures we’ve had.

  12. I was just done with my junior year of college and returned from a week in Paris. I spent the summer working at the newspaper, as I was the editor in chief, and traveling from Purdue to Milwaukee most weekends to see my boyfriend of just a few months. Since then, I graduated, moved to a new state with said boyfriend, got my first grown up job, bought a condo (all in 2005), followed by getting engaged in 2007, starting grad school in 2008 (on top of the job!), and getting married this October. Also, I weigh a good 15 pounds more. Which is just awesome.

  13. oh man 5 years ago i was finishing my sophmore year of college. so much has changed since then! heck i’m engaged and i never thought that would happen, haha.

  14. this is a fun entry…5 years ago we were newlyweds and had just moved to NC. Since then I have changed jobs 5 times (I know!!), bought a house, fixed it up, left the religion we were both raised in, adopted a cat, built a house, became a landlord and adopted 2 puppies. That’s just the major stuff – we’ve done trips and all that as well. It’s amazing how much you can do in 5 years. I have no doubt that the next 5 years will bring a baby or two, hopefully more travel, but hopefully no more job changes!

  15. I started dating my now boyfriend, got my first real job in DC, have moved twice to different apartments, almost bought a townhouse but am glad I waited, bought a new car, have had body/glass work done on the car twice!! for things that were not my fault, got a basset hound, and became a SIL and aunt.

  16. Oh, and after I don’t know how long, I finally found that Vihno Verde wine you posted about some time ago. I haven’t been able to find it in MD but I went to a DC store and found some yesterday. I was even able to sneak it back to my office before taking it home. I haven’t tried it yet but I’m looking forward to it!

  17. Holy crap. May 2004 I was graduating college and trying to figure out where to move. I had looked into the DC area, but it wasn’t until the end of the summer that Edgar and I decided that I’d move to Richmond (where he had moved right after graduation and was living with his brother). We got our first dog during the summer before I even moved down (!), moved into an apartment together, bought a house a year later, got another dog, Edgar changed jobs, we got engaged, got married. I’m still at the same job…but I guess I can’t complain…I have been promoted a couple of times! And now…we are trying to figure out our next step, which will probably be a move to Charlottesville, VA…which means new jobs. AND if I don’t have a baby in the next 5 years, someone is going to get hurt!! :-)

Damn, 5 years at this stage of our lives is HUGE! Thanks for letting me walk down memory lane with you.

  18. I had this conversation today with my roommate from college and realized it’s been six years since I lived with her. We started talking about how much we’ve done since this and it really is amazing.

  19. I got married on may 27th! (2006). It’s a good day, isn’t it? Since that day in 2004, I’ve moved to Amsterdam and then to India, got engaged then married, traveled to about 10 countries I’ve never been to before, got promoted twice and loved my job, bought an apartment in NYC and sold it, bought an apartment in amsterdam… a lot a lot.
