nine months old

I wrote this last week but am just now finding the time to edit and post it! Since I wrote it we arrived in Denver and we’re settling into our tiny but perfect rental house. More soon!

Forgive me if this is a bit of a brain dump, but I am sitting in my 95% empty house on the final night I’ll ever sleep in it, and my babies turned nine months old today, and let’s just say I have a lot of feelings happening lately.

Let me try using some verbs to describe what the last month has been like: crawling, standing, sitting, spinning, whining, babbling, wiggling, exploring, wrestling, purging, packing, crying, laughing.

We’ve been living life to the max lately. I have probably not been my best self too many times this month. I honestly found month nine to be the hardest yet for parenting. Sure, the early sleepless days of the nursing + pumping hamster-wheel were totally insane, but my children also basically laid around in my arms and in a boppy all day long. Now, they never stop moving. Teddy can crawl anywhere he wants, including up a step. He can pull himself up to standing. He has used this skill to maneuver himself toward every single electrical cord in the house. Holden can army crawl anywhere he wants, and the second you are not looking, he will find your cup/bowl/beer bottle and knock it over.

Finally both boys have embraced eating! I can’t wait until we are settled into a new home and I can actually think about meal planning again, but in the meantime we’ve been feeding them french toast (whole grain, no toppings), applesauce, pasta with various sauces (whatever we’re eating), beans, sweet potatoes, peas, hummus, chicken, Cheerios, bananas, pears, and other various things off our plates. They don’t really like pureed food but they don’t eat much if I give them big BLW chunks, so instead I just cut up “regular” food into very small pieces and feed them with a spoon or by hand. Our high chairs are packed away so all this happens with us just sitting on the floor. Very, very casual dining here.

Sleeping has been mostly poor. Both boys are waking 1-2x/night to eat! Ahhhhhh! It’s killing me. I have no idea why they are so starving in the middle of the night. I still feed them tons of milk during the day, and now two meals per day. And yet, 2, 3, 4, and 5am are all meal times now too. This has to end soon, it just has to! Naps have been slightly better, in that they’ve been doing crib naps for the last week or so. Sometimes twice a day and sometimes they still need three naps. And yes, it took me nine months to have them nap in their cribs, don’t judge. We also did a bout of floor naps this month because guess what? You can’t fall off the floor! (ahem, couch)

I would describe Holden as precise, swift, quiet, funny, thoughtful, easy-going, wiggly, mellow, and happy. He is long and lean and is really started to get thick reddish-blond hair! His face is just pure sweetness.

I would describe Teddy as adventurous, strong, expressive, curious, loyal (to his mama especially), happy, and hungry. He is just so physical and has no problem crawling over anything in his path (including his brother). Teddy has been pretty attached to me this month, which is sweet and also slightly oppressive.

As for me, I’m slowly cutting down my pumping, and now only doing it twice per day (but still making half of what they drink per day). Using donor milk and formula for the other half. The end of pumping is in sight for me, and it actually feels really good.

And, this is where I stopped writing and probably passed out from exhaustion. I’ll save the updates (including a big one about quitting pumping!) for my next post.

I love them! That top photo of the two of them is exactly how you describe them! Holden is all, “Hmm,” and Teddy is all, “WHAT’S UP, WORLD?!”

    I miss you already!

Oh, they are so perfect! I love them!

I totally remember the early crawling days. Alexander found every single electrical cord in our house for us — even ones we didn’t realize we had. These boys!

I both look forward to and dread the age where Miriam is suddenly mobile and into everything. I can’t believe your boys are already there, the time has passed so quickly. They are lovely, beautiful boys. I’m so excited to see you guys get into your new Denver groove!

I miss you and your tidbits but know you’ve been BEYOND busy.

As for Holden and Teddy, they continue to be just so beautiful. I love them.

Aww, I love this update! I also love that first photo and Teddy’s face…oh, man! Kicking myself once again that I didn’t make it over to see you guys before we moved to our respective new states.

Hope they start sleeping better soon (with less nighttime feedings)!

Good job pumping to 9mo, that is quite a feat! We are 3mo in EBF our twin boys but I believe it was because I was able to fight my doctor and go to 38wks. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to have teeny babies and nurse/pump.
    Great job Momma!!!
