goin’ to the chapel…

About 3.2 seconds after Andrew proposed, he asked if we could please not start planning the wedding yet, but rather just enjoy it for a little bit and save the stress for later. Blinded by the diamond on my finger, I agreed.

Except that within 3 days, I had registered on theknot.com, bought two wedding magazines, started making a wedding binder, drafted a guest list, and searched around for venues and dresses online. All I can say is Sorry Sweetie!, but you are marrying a certifiably insane OCD planner. Forgive me?

The big questions still need to be decided before I can delve into the “little things” that I love so much. We tried to narrow the date down to December 2006, but that could change at any moment. Ideally, I would like to get married sooner, but June seems too soon to plan and Andrew works in politics, so he will be swamped with work through November.

The next big decision is the location. Colorado, my home state and the most gorgeous place on earth, but freezing cold in December? Or a faraway beach in the Caribbean, Mexico, or Hawaii? I’m looking forward to talking these things over with our families over the holidays. If there is anyone out there who has been to or hosted a destination wedding, I welcome all advice!

I can tell you what I have decided. I will not wear a poofy dress. I’d love a rich plum purple color for the bridesmaid dresses. I want some sexy stilettos unless I am barefoot on the beach. I’m growing my hair out. And I want to make my own invitations.

Even though Andrew thinks I am crazy, I can’t wait for the real planning to begin!

  1. Within 10 minutes of getting engaged I was mentally choosing the bridal party…I feel ya!!

  2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you want to make the invitations!!

All that I can say is, you better start now, you crazy crafter you!

  3. yup… I was nuts too after about 30 seconds. I was in a destination wedding in Feb in the Virgin Islands… let me know if you have any questions!!

  4. I was married once before (I was young, you have to forgive me). We got married in December and I loved it. I didn’t want “christmas colors”, so we had dark greens and reds and some purple. And we had this awesome sleigh to put all the gifts in. Man, it was beautiful. (But-the pictures still looked very “Christmasie” and looked out of place on display during the rest of the year.)

The second wedding (and the one that “counts”) was in August in a small old school. So beautiful.

What I am saying…weddings are always beautiful. You are going to have a blast planning it.

  5. you say you started planning like you haven’t been planning your wedding since you were, like, 11.

  6. Dude. I’m glad I’m not the only one to busy to post every day. But I miss you! So happy your plans are going well. Even if it turns into a “covert” opp. Let me know if you have any ?’s!

  7. Came across your blog accidentally… Planning your wedding is fun! I found that making invitations, programs, and centerpieces (paper lanterns) all from the same paper gave me a chance to enjoy time with my girlfriends, because I made them help assemble! Saved a ton of money and they were beautiful and different. Enjoy!!

  8. Oh girl, I know exactly what you are talking about! I joined The Knot within 4 hours of getting engaged. I remember my then-fiance’s reaction… “oh my gosh… I’ve really created a monster now!” Ah well, have fun! It’s exciting!

    My couple of advice tidbits:
    1. I made tons of stuff for my wedding, like the invitations and flower arrangements. Great $ saver and fun, too!
    2. I’d only do the destination wedding IF I was cool with having just a few people at the wedding, and if Ithink they will be comfortable paying the extra money to attend.

I think CO sounds awesome… winter weddings can be gorgeous!
