mental junk food
January 25th, 2007 @ 12:10 am | food | Post a CommentI’m sorry, but I am incapable of writing a post tonight because my stomach ate my brain. It was hungry.
So yeah, the diet rocks! Day 4, still hungry, so it must be working, right? I know that “you aren’t supposed to be hungry on South Beach,” and the fact that I am hungry probably means I am failing miserably and doomed to fatness. But you see, I don’t really like meat. And I am already sick of eggs. I still love cheese. But a girl can only eat so much cheese and salad and sugar-free jello.
Do you think they could somehow create a vegetarian-style South Beach? But no tofu please, because I don’t like that either.
Okay, I’ll stop whining now.
Instead of consuming edible junk food, I’ve been putting junk food right into my brain. Tonight I watched American Idol, Real World Denver (hometown woo hoo!), Engaged and Underage (awesomely horrible new MTV show), and The Hills. Oh, and some show on HGTV where the woman had a cow-themed bathroom. In Harlem.
I’ll leave you with that mental image as I’m off to eat a sugar-free fudgsicle, the highlight of my day!

Oh, that is sad. Don’t be hungry! I hope the fudgsicle was good. Can you eat sugar-free pudding? I had some Jell-o sugar-free chocolate and coffee flavored sundae (not the exact name but something like that) pudding today, and it was actually pretty good.

Wow, I seriously bet that woman with that silly bathroom on HGTV can’t be more than 20 blocks from me. I’ve heard there’s a Tulane alum on Real World Denver - is there?

Hi Janet-love,
Have missed you and you blog - and what’s this about a diet? You are gorgeously lovely, and definately don’t need to be on one.
That being said, I read somewhere that if you’re feeling hungry you should either check that you’re eating enough OR drinking enough water.
Hope you’re doing well, and to chat soon! xoxo

Oh no, sweetie, you’ve been lied to. You will be hungry for about the first week and a half to two weeks. THEN the not hungry all of the time kicks in. After the first month, I was addicted to the SBD. Trust me on this one.

I hope it gets better for you…I think that’s why I can’t diet…I can’t stand being hungry. However, I really should be dieting and get over it…or at least go to the gym once in a while.
Good luck!

Maybe you should give tofu another try??? Remember, its flavored like whatever you cook it with! Can you eat peanut butter on the south beach diet? Peanut butter and apples were my favorite snack on my pre-wedding diet.

I bet that you wouldn’t be so hungry if you had watched educational programming like GIRLS NEXT DOOR.

I totally have to agree with Lindsey. Someone lied to you, woman! I did the SBD, and was STARVED, like the kind of watching-commercials-with-food-made-me-insane starved, for the first two weeks. Then it got better. Plus, I sort of modified it after the first week because hello, I am lactose intolerant, and imagine your current diet with NO DAIRY. Of any kind.
No.

How about a chocolate-style South Beach diet? I’d sign up for that in a minute! :o)

Hiya there,
Just wanted to give you some blogger moral support, because I’m on a diet too! Actually, I think of it more as a lifestyle eating habit change instead of a diet. I’m not on anything with a name to it. Instead, I have decided to cut out: sugar, processed foods, hydrogenated foods, starches, soda, etc. and replace it with: vegetables (fresh), fruit (fresh), fish, and the like. Oh, I’ve also given up my gum chewing habit since artificial sweeteners are so bad for you. Anyways, I feel your hunger pains. And cravings. It’s been about a week for me, so I’m hoping the cravings will go away pretty soon. Hope it goes well! Keep up the good work!

You shouldn’t be hungry on SBD. You may be craving food you shouldn’t have, but you can eat as many veggies as you want…so there’s no reason to go hungry. Beans helped fill me up, lentil soup, veggie chili, garbanzo or kidney beans on my salad, etc…
Hope that helps!

I have a friend who is a vegetarian, but she hates vegetables. I think that’s kind of like being on South Beach and not liking meat.
But I totally hear you, I did Atkins once for three days to support my friend, and I never felt sicker. There is a limit to how many cheese and turkey roll-ups you can make yourself eat before you start to feel sick. And the limit is not very high.

I don’t eat meat, either, so I missed out on all the no-carb fun because I probably would have starved. But imagine the weight I would have lost! I love to eat too much to starve. Hope you find success with SB!
Elise, have you tried hard cheese and yogurt? The way they’re processed breaks down the lactose and makes it easier for your body to digest.

JP - I have tried yogurt with minimal success, but hey, ANY dairy success is something to be happy about in my book
Cheese is like my ultimate nemesis. I haven’t tried hard cheese, per say - care to give some suggestions?

Try snacking on nuts (peanuts, almonds and pistachi’s in phase one) through out the day, they really help me. And too, I snack on fat free/low fat lunch meat (look for the ‘turkey roll up’ recipe in the phase one recipe section). And low fat laughing cow cheese, that is great with celery sticks! After about day three (for me) I lost all my cravings for anything bad, and pretty much had no appetite at all….strange. I guess it affects everyone differently.
I know it’s tough to be on a diet, but hang in there! It does get easier.

Good idea…if you can’t pig out on junk food pig out on junk TV. I love American Idol this season…what a multicolored bunch of freaky contestants.

Feeling hungry is not fun…no, not at all. That’s why experts say diets fail, you know. Feeling deprived. Not good! If you eat tons of vegetables (even on the South Beach, can’t you steam veggies if you want to?), you’ll get full without all the calories.

I saw the first “engaged and underage”…it’s a train wreck. What are your thoughts???
(Hooray for the new diet. Sorry you’re hungry. But yeah, I guess that means it’s working.)
