It started a couple of weeks ago.

“Boy, your hair is really getting long.”

“It would be (long pause) really great if you got a cute new haircut.”

“How long are you growing your hair?”

Okay, I get it people, I know my hair is long, and perhaps it’s also scraggly and flat. But you have to understand, I like long hair. I am long hair.

(This is coming from a girl who still sleeps with her childhood blankie. Some might say I have attachment issues. I prefer to think that I simply know what I like and when I find it I don’t let it go.)

Isn’t long, wavy, flowy blonde hair supposed to be sexy? Youthful? Feminine? On days when I am feeling chubby or zitty or pale, I never have to worry too much because I still have my hair.

For the past year and a half I’ve had an excuse. I’m growing my hair out for the wedding. Nobody questions the wants and desires of the bride. But now that I’m married, I don’t have any excuse. I’m keeping my hair long for…….the winter. It just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

I worry that one day, in addition to owning 24 cats, I will have to be lured onto Oprah for one of those total makeovers where they cut off my butt-length ponytail and reveal the true woman living underneath. Please, if you really love me, do not let that happen to me, okay?

And so tomorrow, if all things go as planned I’m going to get 3-4 inches cut off. It will still be long, so I have nothing to panic about, but I can’t help but anticipate having just a little bit of sadness.

God, I can’t believe I just admitted that to the internet.

  1. I think it’s gorgeous! Don’t cut it!

  2. Ok, I didn’t read the end…3-4 inches will look great!

  3. Sister, I have regretted cutting my hair since…..oh, ok, I’ll admit it, since about 3 days after I said, “oh yeaaah, I loooove having cute, springy, flippy hair”. Its’ been in a twist ever since. I want my long hair back, and am growing it out as we speak. So go for it, trim, but DON’T CUT!

  4. I love your hair — Love, Love, Love. But you know what? A change really is good.

Yes, this is coming from me who had a freakout when the hairdresser cut (gasp) a decent 4 inches off the back and TWICE as long at the front (in layers, gack!).

    I hated it.
    But it grows on you.
And man, does it feel healthier. :)
You have no reason to hide behind that sexy mane, so whatever you do will be awesome. And I demand pictures!

  5. I think your long hair looks so lovely. I wish I could have long, flowly hair…it is sexy! 3 to 4 inches will be okay. Just remember that at trim always makes hair look better. So you hair will still be long, but it’ll be even Better!

  6. How do you get those waves?? I love your hair!! So pretty.

  7. I would give up coffee AND frozen pizza for a year to have your hair. 3-4 inches off won’t hurt… it’s good to get a trim every once in awhile, and it will still be plenty long. Plus, hair grows faster when you trim it :)
My boyfriend’s mother has the kind of hair that should land her on Oprah. You are miles and universes away from that!

Oh, and I love the sepia pictures. Especially the one with Howie (or is that Hugo?) looking pensive in the background. You can tell that he doesn’t think you should cut your hair short.

  8. I made my after-wedding hair cut appointment when I made my wedding hair appointment. My long hair was driving me cuh-razy and I had the girl hack it all off. But that’s just me. Sadness about hair isn’t weird! Real weirdness would be like… saving the hair or incorporating it into your blankie. Cringe.

I think 3-4 inches will be a good change. Hair always grows back, you know?

  9. You look stunning.

  10. I usually like to get my hair cut, as long as the hair person actually listens to what I say instead of going crazy. Ahem. 3 to 4 inches is a good amount. I think it will look great.

You look gorgeous in that first picture.

  11. I love that fat old Hugo is sitting in the background of the second picture! All I want to say is, how do you know you wouldn’t like having shorter hair, you’ve never tried it! Good luck with the big haircut, don’t worry I know from many many too short haircut experiences, it always grows back :)

  12. WHOA WHO IS THAT HOTT GIRL? I say if you can always sit/walk with that pose from pic #1, in sepia-toned lighting with that expression, with your hair perfectly arranged that way…then don’t cut your hair. It’s a great picture!

  13. I always had an excuse for growing out my hair too. Then I made the mistake of saying I was growing it out for Locks of Love to a good friend of mine who had just made a comment which led me to believe she did not find uber long hair all that flattering on me. Which of course meant I had to cut it off for just that purpose. In October I finally got up the nerve and had 16 inches cut off and sent it to Locks of Love. It went from being almost to my bum to being chin length with one swipe of the scissors. You know what? I absolutely love it now even though the first few days post cut was a bit traumatic. I think you look beautiful, but I think you’ll still look beautiful minus a few inches of hair.

  14. I love your hair in so many ways. I didn’t want to tell you not to cut it, but it sounds like everyone else is saying it. So I’m going to join in….

    don’t cut it.

(a trim, maybe. But don’t cut it off.)

  15. Calm down people, 3-4 inches is hardly a cut! Your hair should change every season. I’ve heard. Maybe that’s color. Whatever.

Just dont start wearing chopsticks as hair ornaments or wearing cropped bonnets as headbands and you will be fine.

  16. Oh man, don’t cut it. It is so beautiful!!

  17. I had butt-length hair for most of my life, and then about 5 inches shorter when I got married. Then, about two years after I was married, I got sick of long hair and chopped it to my neck in a really super cute bob. It was all flippy and swingy and stylin’! Sometimes I’d miss my long hair, like when I’d see other girls with their long manes. But it was a nice change to have. The only problem were the constant comments from my hubby who hated the short hair and sighed and nagged every time I had it trimmed. But the problem is that it was unhealthy and had been highlighted and dyed and so my excuse was that I was letting the damaged parts grow out and get chopped off before I grew it out naturally again. So… five years later, it is finally dye and color free and is now getting somewhat long. It’ll probably take another year or two for it to be as long as it once was, but at least I don’t have to live with sighing and groaning over the loss of my locks anymore (even if they aren’t blonde anymore! *sniff*). Oh well. You’ll look great however long or short your hair is! :)

  18. Your hair is beautiful! I, too, have long, blond hair, but it is no where near as cute as yours. Do you do something to curl the ends or is that just the way it is? I came this way from Hola, Isabel. Your wedding picture at the right is gorgeous!

  19. Your hair is absolutely beautiful. Makes me want to grow mine out again.

  20. I cut my long hair about 14 months ago. I still regret it and am growing it out as fast as possible, even though I got lots of positive feedback on the shorter cut. It’s just nice to have long hair!

I think your hair is pretty!!

Ps, you totally took those pictures with your iSight right? Mac lovers rule.

  21. I love your hair! I wish mine was that gorgeous. 3-4 inches isn’t too much…just don’t cut more! And don’t be sad about it because trimming a few inches will just make it more healthy.

My sister is always trying to get me to cut my hair (although it’s not as long as yours) and I don’t want to. I want it LONG! :)

  22. I think it’s beautiful and I would die for that hair.
