fake cheese is not your friend

Sometimes I wish I could seriously kick my own ass. I just celebrated finishing Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet and losing 7.5 pounds by eating half a jar of queso. Sabotage!!!

There are things I liked about South Beach. I ate more veggies in the past two weeks than ever before. Andrew and I tried out a few new recipes including this chicken that we made twice. I stopped munching on empty calories in the middle of the work day.

Then there are things I really struggled with. If I never eat meat again in my life that will be okay. Ditto eggs.

I don’t think my cravings ever totally disappeared. There were times I felt compelled to eat just one bite of something sweet, which would have been allowed on Weight Watchers as long as I counted the points. I hate that South Beach has so many banned foods.

Bottom line is, it works, and I am going to do my best to balance the principles of it with the realities of my life over the next few weeks and lose a little bit more.

More than anything I wish I could snap my fingers and become a person who loves to eat salads and veggies and never craves chips, cheese and chocolate. I’ve been on enough diets in my life to know what it takes to get skinny, and for me it’s just mind over matter making it happen. I can’t give in to hunger, cravings, tiredness, stress, or habits.

So I’m going to go put the rest of the queso in the fridge (out of sight, out of mind!) and grab some celery to eat for the rest of the night. Tomorrow, I’m back on the wagon.

  1. Is there anyone in this world who never craves anything like chips, cheese or chocolate? Everyone has to have a vice or fifteen! I reckon you’ve done really well. Witholding foods completely and making them taboo makes cravings so much worse. Allowing yourself a certain amount each week is a good idea I think.

  2. Wow, I don’t think I could go anywhere on a diet that completely cuts things out. I’d go bonkers!

That being said, I haven’t really gone very far with this current healthy eating; going back to school makes Aly lazy. :(
Everything in moderation, chook. A little cheese won’t hurt in the long run. And BLEH. I can’t stand celery, unless it’s in a Waldorf Salad. Too celery-ish tasting for me, bahaha!

  3. Did you watch the Super Bowl? Did you manage to stay on the wagon? The game is just an excuse to eat piles of cheese and meat, so I would be totally impressed with that.

  4. I love veggies. And I eat them.
But I also love Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips, so I eat them too.

    Is that a problem :)

  5. I did the Body for Life program for a while and you only have to stay on the diet six days a week - I loved that! Except that on that 7th day when I ate my fill of queso and cookies I would always feel baaddddd (not bad about myself, but physically bad.) Does that happen to you?

  6. I would be completely unable to do South Beach… I am such a carb addict! I know that I should eat less sugar and more of other things, but… I don’t want to!!

Good luck with keeping the willpower in check. You’re stronger than I.

  7. I am of the opinion that chocolate is a health food. Think about it, it comes from beans - that’s protein. It’s full of anti-oxidants and it is clinically proven to make me smile… therefore - it’s healthy! Yes, I will justify this until the day I die (probably from eating too much chocolate)

  8. Ooh, I tried Atkins. I don’t know much about South Beach, but I’m wary of anything that bans carbs like that. I put everything back on and more. Weight Watchers is the greatest plan, in my humble opinion. But I do hear the recipes on SoBe are good.

  9. I ate my weight in Superbowl snacks yesterday. I feel for ya, sister.

    Salt and vinegar chips…..MMMMMM

  10. Girl, don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s okay to have the sweets and chips every now and then, just do everything in moderation. I should be telling myself that though because sweets and I, we don’t do moderation!!

  11. I think diets that absolutely restrict certain foods are the hardest. That’s why the (so-called) “experts” say to “eat what you want in moderation,” because people tend to reach for them as soon as they’re “allowed.” Just my thoughts for the day. :)
    Congrats on making it through!

  12. 1st time reader, found you from girl/wino, and boy can I relate to the cheese cravings. I can’t go a day without cheese, I swear. Good luck to you and may your willpower be stronger than Kraft advertising.

I’ll be back to check in!

  13. Congrats on the loss. That rocks.

I’m like you…can’t live without the sweets. It’s bad, I know!

  14. Congrats!! The first 2 weeks are definately the hardest. I’m still in phase 2, not really losing anymore though. I think it’a a slow loss. Chekc out the website 3fatchicks.com if you haven’t already. They have a southbeach forum thats pretty good.

  15. Oh and the Popcicle brand sugar-free fudgebars saved my life
