much ado about not much

I bet you’re all waiting eagerly to find out if we are moving to San Francisco aren’t you? Based on all of your comments and encouragement and the very cool reputation of the city, we have decided not to move.

While my anxiety level has dropped to normal levels, I’m a little sad too. I’ve lived in the South, New England, the Midwest, the East Coast, and the Mountain West, but I’ve never lived in California, and at this point in my life I probably never will. I pride myself on being able to move and adapt and even flourish, so it’s hard to turn down this offer. (Especially when they keep sweetening the deal with more dollar signs!) (Also sad that I won’t be hanging out with with Stacy anytime soon. Or eating In ‘n Out burger regularly.)

Ultimately, we agreed that doing political work in DC is better for Andrew than doing political work in California. It would be like a stockbroker moving from Wall Street to Miami. Or a television producer moving from Hollywood to Boise. Or something. You get my point, right?

I’m still holding out hope that we will move to my motherland of Colorado, but Andrew would probably tell me to keep on dreaming. And so I will!

And finally, because he got my hopes up about exploring a new part of the country and then took it all away in one short week, Andrew has promised to take me on a nice vacation to the Bay Area. One of these days. When he gets a job.

Oh, that will be nice.

  1. Oh dear! I’m a little sad for you becuase I think you would like San Fran. But it makes sense - and it was kind of out of the blue! Hope Andrew finds a job closer to home soon!

  2. That is a little sad, especially after getting your hopes up a tiny bit. But a vacation definately sounds promising! :)

  3. I must say that I’m happy you’re staying on the East coast. It’s where all the cool people are :). Hope Andrew finds his dream job soon!

  4. I was so excited for you when I read the last post — it’s so easy to be excited for someone else, when you’re not dealing with the scary aspects yourself.

Last year Joel applied for 2 coaching positions in Oregon and Washington. Awesome positions became available at two universities, and we felt that if he didn’t apply, we’d never know if he could have gotten them. I was sick to my stomach, because it would mean moving across the country, him taking a big paycut, and leaving everyone and everything I knew… but then when he didn’t get the jobs, I was kind of disappointed. After a few weeks to adjust to the idea, I was kind of excited.

Oh well. Congrats to Andrew on getting an offer! Here’s to hoping he finds something even better in DC soon!

  5. It’s too bad that certain jobs are concentrated in certain areas. It’s very good if you want to stay in that area, but not so good when you want to broaden your horizons. :)

  6. I’m glad that you’re back down to lower anxiety levels and the logic all makes sense. So - yay for that, right?

Maybe a vacation to SF is in order now. Then you can visit Stacy AT In-n-Out!

  7. Visiting Stacy at In n Out sounds like a good compromise. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that some other SWEET offer comes in - from Colorado - or you know, DC. :)

  8. Why don’t you and Andrew just go into business and bring In-n-Out to the East Coast?? It would be awesome, except that we’d all have to buy bigger pants.

  9. I think Colorado is definitely the way to go. Tell Andrew I said so. Because I know how much he values the opinions of random internet people he doesn’t know.

  10. Sad you’re not moving to the fabulous west coast, but I’m glad that you’re anxiety level has dropped. I really can’t imagine picking up and moving to a new city…as exciting as it sounds, I think it would be scary.

And, btw, In-N-Out is seriously THE best burger ever. I grew up down in SoCal and whenever I go down to visit, I always have to have a burger. Yum!

  11. Darn.

  12. It’s hard to take the East Coast out of the “East Coast Elitist”

    Welcome back (or something).

  13. I can only say this now that you aren’t moving…

I’ve been to SF a few times and if I had to pick, I would rather be in LA.

(People who live and love SF, please don’t hate me. Or throw things.)

  14. I’ve never been there either. But it sounds so glorious and warm, what’s not to love? Of course DC is also known for its glory and warmth so don’t worry (okay, sometimes I lie to try to make people feel better).
