hardly your average wednesday
March 21st, 2007 @ 5:46 pm | blonde moments, dc | Post a CommentMost of my days go like this: Get up (late), go to work (blah), work out (if I’m lucky), eat dinner (yum!), waste a bunch of time (lame) and go to sleep (late). Aren’t you jealous of my awesome life?
Today was totally different though, because I had jury duty!
Now, I haven’t actually been chosen for the jury yet, and I don’t want to jinx my chances so all I’ll tell you is that it’s a federal case (read: I am a bigwig) of criminal nature that involves alleged REDACTED, charges of REDACTED and REDACTED, implications of REDACTED, and whatnot. Aren’t you intrigued?
The case is supposed to last more than a month, and the jury won’t even be chosen until sometime next week, which means that I could be in for a long absence from work. My boss is simply thrilled, let me tell you. On the other hand, I could be off the hook as early as Monday. We’re on a day by day basis.
It all feels so….Dramatic. So Patriotic. So Important.
Or maybe I’m just creating a little soap opera in my head about it. It’s not like I really want to get chosen. Sitting in a courtroom for five weeks seems extraordinarily long and torturous. But at the same time, I don’t want to get rejected either. It’s like Homecoming Court or the 5th Grade softball team. You don’t outwardly want to get chosen, but you don’t want to be rejected either because that means you must be ugly or unpopular or uncoordinated.
So, I think I have a jury duty complex. I want them to want me! I’m smart and savvy and impartial, right? I can presume innocence and avoid the news and decide guilt beyond a reasonable doubt! I can do my civic duty as an American! Dammit I am good enough for your jury!
Do you think I’m crazy now? Wait. Please don’t answer that one.
Tonight, instead of sitting around twirling my hair as usual, husby and I are going to a Pete Yorn concert. We are only cool enough to do things like this about once a year, so I plan to live it up and have a drink or two and let myself be seduced by a sexy rockstar man singing on stage. Er, I mean by my husband. While listening to a sexy man on stage. Yeah, that’s what I meant to say.
And finally, because -R- asked and Isabel already obliged, here is a photo of me at a high school dance. It’s not prom because my parents have their house on the market and apparently those memories are already packed away, but I hope this will do. Please don’t all make fun of the bangs at once. I already know they are Exxxtra Hott, you don’t have to tell me.

First of all…CUTE PIC!!!
I’ll have to find one of my prom pics and post it!
Anyway, about jury duty. I was summoned about 5 years ago and was actually chosen to be on the jury. It was a medical malpractice lawsuit and lasted 2 weeks.
My job at the time paid full wages for jury duty, so it totally rocked that I didn’t have to work, but still got paid.
And, the actual jury duty was fun. My dream (until college) was to be a lawyer, so I thought it was really cool to actually see it all up close and personal and be a part of it.
Good luck! If you do get chosen I think you’d really enjoy it. Just make sure to bring a book or 5 to read during the recesses.

I am so jealous! I want to be on a jury. Plus a federal jury - even cooler! Was there a jury questionnaire? Did you write anything awesome on it?
Pete Yorn - yay! I am sure that listening/looking to/at him, I mean enjoying the concert with your husband, will be very fun.
The high school dance picture is fantastic. I love the traditional on the stairs pose. Also, I think there may be a little bit of “OMG Are you done taking pictures yet?” in there. I am still debating whether to block out my date’s face. I feel like the combined geekiness of both my date and me might need to be seen.

Wow, I would try to come off as biased and subjective as possible so as to get off the hook. But lots of reading time would be nice…
I don’t even know where I would get a prom picture if I wanted to take part in that challenge. The only thing I liked about my prom was my dress (purple! and iridescent!) and I’m not sure if that’s still true because it was my measure of skinniness all through college. I’m almost positive that I would be a big fatty if I used it as my scale now.
And also - your parents are moving? How did I miss this? Is that sad for you a little bit?

I can see where you are coming from with the jury duty. I’ve never been called in for duty and I really don’t want to do it, but at the same time I’m like, why haven’t they called me? I think if they pick you it could be really interesting to see how it all goes down, but if they don’t, just be happy you don’t have to give your life to the courts for a few weeks. I wouldn’t take it personally if you don’t get it though.
Oh and you are adorable in that picture!!

That guy is hot, apart from that huge blackhead which seems to be engulfing his face.
You, on the other hand, are cute and blackhead-free. More than most of us can say about how we looked during high school!

Who was that guy? Looks like it could be Scot but I can’t really tell. What dance was it?
My friend Dan had jury duty in Denver, and he ended up becomming buddy buddy with the main anchor for 9 News. Maybe you’ll make an awesome connection. (He also wants to go in to journalism, so it worked out quite well for him).

Your bangs are smashing, darling. And I’m in severe ENVY right now, I love Pete Yorn! Hoping you and Andrew have a fabulous time.
Jury duty sounds interesting.. yet terrifying. I told Angela that it always reminds me of two things - the movie “The Juror” and the CSI episode where a member of the jury was killed because he wouldn’t vote a certain way. Cheerful, no?

I think I would feel the same way about jury duty. “I don’t want to do it, but I’ll feel rejected if you don’t choose me!” How bizarre.
I had the exact same bangs. Good thing I grew them out about five years ago. I had them all my life but have never looked back.

Good luck with jury duty - I think you would enjoy it actually! But five weeks is a looonnggg time.

you were a rock star, even then (when most of us had headgear that made us drool on our algebra homework, but i digress . . .)
if you end up not wanting the five-week jury duty, i’ll trade with you! i live for that stuff. and would, admittedly, feel the exact same way that you would if i was not chosen.

Okay, I LOVE that you black out the entire face and not just like eyes like I do. That made me laugh so hard.
And also, you have great hair. I envy you.
And also, I felt the same way when I was called to jury duty. I wanted to be picked. I didn’t want them to not want me.
And really, it was fun to do jury duty. But I only did it for a week.
Keep us posted.
Oh….and I LOVE PETE YORN and am so jealous. Can’t wait to hear about it.

Jury Duty: Depends on what time I’m supposed to be there… to steal a line from one of my favorite TV shows - “as far as I’m concerned, before 10 am - everyone’s guilty!”
Big Bangs: soooo hot! And hello blonde bombshell!! Wowza, love the pic!

I, too, envy your hair. I do not envy the jury duty. Every time I get called (yes, “every” time, I’ve served on 2 juries already!) I WANT them to pick me (I want you to want me… I need you to need me… hum along!) But the last time I served it was such a soul-sucking, demoralizing experience that I never want to get called again. I hope you get picked, and that you have a much better experience than I did! Five weeks would for sure get a little boring by the end, but you’ll be part of America’s grand justice system. Exciting! plus, it would be totally fun to read about on your blog.

You and your jury duty fetish. You are totally crazy, woman! I almost peed my pants when I found out I DIDN’T have to go. It was a celebratory occasion, let me tell you.

Jury Doody, I’ve *never* wanted to be picked. Those NINvironments always serve as reminders of just how pathetic subcultures of society can truly be.

I love that picture! And the bangs!!
I just posted on R’s blog about the ubiquity of the group-shot-in-the-front-yard shot… Now you bring us the other classic–the banister shot!
My mom claims she put a nice banister in our house specifically for prom shots.

It seems like something Pete Yorn would do, eating crayons.
Also, Re: Bangs - OH NO.
Also? You’re adorable

Everyone always hates doing jury duty but I’ve always secretly thought that it would be fun. But I’ve never had to do it. Yet, anyway. Oh yes, love the dance picture.
