they should call it Caloriefest 2007

I pretty much run in two circles here in DC:

  • Low-level Democratic operatives

So perhaps that is why my stint volunteering at tonight’s Taste of the Nation, a giant food and wine extravaganza benefiting hungry kids in DC, included the following less-than-stellar moments:

  • Scoping out semi-pro foodies Amalah and her husband but not having the guts to actually go and say hello. I am such a weenie! She looked real pretty though, and had cute shoes! (Side note: This is why I shouldn’t go to Blogher. I’m kinda afraid of actually meeting people.)
  • Hanging out with a well-known, award-winning DC chef and dumbly asking him what restaurant he worked at, because how the heck am I supposed to know this stuff? They didn’t make me pass a dining aptitude test to volunteer, people. (Did I mention he is cute and single? Um, too bad I’m not!)
  • Getting mistaken for a Lufthansa flight attendant because their logo was plastered on my free volunteer t-shirt. Nope, I’m more of an AirTran girl myself.
  • Eating two (!) helpings of decadent lobster macaroni and cheese because I’m pretty much 100% sure that I will never legitimately eat at this fancypants restaurant on my own dime.

Despite my social inadequacies, it was fun to be on my feet, running around, and eating small plates of deliciousness in the name of ending childhood hunger.

  1. You actually saw Amalah?? Oh my gosh, that is too cool!

So while you were eating lobster macaroni, children were starving??? You must have felt so good about yourself. :-) just joking

  2. I am shocked that you didn’t say hello to Amalah! But I guess I might not have either if actually in the moment. It’s so neat you got to help out. I want to hang out with low-level operatives (pout).

  3. I would have freaked out seeing Amy, she’s the first blogger I ever read. =X Blog-ebrity! :P I wish I could go to Blogher though, damn this other continent crap. ;)
Urgh, don’t talk to me about food. I just splurged for the first time in a month and boy, does my stomach hate me!

  4. I think it’s sort of funny that a benefit for hungry kids involves a ton of eating. But lobster mac-n-cheese? Who could resist? Yum.

  5. YUUUUUMMMMMMM!!!! (No, not the lobster mac-n-cheese. The hot chef!!!!!)

Since you couldn’t have him for yourself, did you get the digits so you could hook up your cute single friends? :)

  6. I told a really good friend of mine about the taste of DC thing last night, because I wanted him and his wife to go and scope out Amalah for me. haha

But Alas, it is still passover so he couldn’t.

Glad you had a good time!

  7. Lobster Macaroni and Cheese?!?! That is like my dream!

I secretly want to fly Lufthansa because they have the cutest Subway advertising… but where would I go?

  8. It sounds like you had fun! Yay for getting out of the house and eating awesome food!

  9. I’m going to BlogHer though my biggest fear is that I’ll spend the whole time in the corner, afraid to say hello to anyone. So you should come and we can sit there together! I may never have the courage to say hello to Amalah (Amy C) either. What is she *gasp* spoke to me?

  10. Mmmmm… yum!! I don’t think SLC has a “Taste” - but I went to the Taste of Chicago a few years ago and had a blast! Although, in Chi-town they don’t have lobster macaroni & cheese…it’s more of a beer & bratwurst kind of town. ;o)

  11. Grr I didn’t hear about Taste of DC this year. bummer.

  12. I’m pretty sure all that running around you did definitely made up for the 2 servings of lobster mac. Who in their right mind would pass up the opportunity to indulge like that, anyway?

  13. Kind of like the time I went to Seattle for vacation and was too chicken to email Isabel to see if she wanted to meet up. GAH! Maybe we are leading parellel lives. In that case, I think we should both get over our fear of talking to famous internet people. You first!

  14. Dude, how fun.

But I can’t believe you didn’t say “hi” to Amalah.

And really…you should come to BlogHer. I promise I will only hug you a little.

  15. Yum!! I am flying on AirTran tomorrow to Florida! I wish I was flying on Lufthansa to Europe instead :(

  16. Eating in the name of hunger makes total sense. I mean, it’s not like they were going to box up the leftovers and send them to the children anyway right? :) hee.

    Glad you had fun.
