baby name game

First, a few disclaimers:

1. I am not pregnant nor am I trying to get pregnant anytime soon. I just happen to be mildly cuh-ray-zee and also a Type A Planner.

2. If I happen to dis your name or the name you have chosen for your own kid (or perhaps the name that was bestowed upon your Cabbage Patch Kid in 1986) then please don’t hate me. If it makes you feel any better, I don’t totally love my own name, and when I got married I was more than happy to get rid of my middle name.

And now, onto my confession story…

My name is Janet and I love to play the Baby Name Game.

There, I said it. I frequently suggest baby names to Andrew, most of which he dismisses on the principle that he doesn’t even want to participate in my stupid game. On road trips, my sister-in-law and I have methodically gone through every letter of the alphabet and chosen a favorite male and female name for each letter. I have an oft-changing Top 10 list of monikers for my future kids (who will probably need therapy; I should really start saving up for that expense now).

Andrew and I easily agreed on the name of our first daughter. In my perfect world, I’d have two girls and we’d never need a boy’s name. However, in his perfect world we will be blessed with one of each, which means we need a plan in case we get a boy.

We cannot agree on a name for this future hypothetical baby boy. Which pretty much assures me I will have one if not two or three of them. It’s no wonder why we can’t agree, given the names that have been proposed:

(Oh, and before I tell you the names, you have to keep in mind that our kids are probably going to be very blonde, very pale, and very nerdy.)

1. Magnus - I love it! He hates it! My sisters and bff, after they stopped laughing, told me they would disown me if I named my kid Magnus, even though they were pretty sure I was joking (I wasn’t). I like the name and so does Will Ferrell. What’s so bad about it, other than his nickname would probably be Maggie?

2. Holden - He loves it! I hate it! Ask anyone what they think of when they hear the name Holden, and they will tell you: Catcher in the Rye. Without blinking that is what they will say. I’m not going to saddle some poor kid with that burden for life!

3. Bennett - I love it, he hates it. (Do you see a theme here?) Our last name starts with a B, and I love the alliteration of Ben B_______. And Bennett just makes it so much more…hunky. And sophisticated.

4. Sherrod - Husband thinks this name is awesome, I do not. Can you really see a little quasi-albino kid playing with Star Wars toys on the playground with the name Sherrod? No.

5. Owen - I love this name, and have not yet figured out why husband doesn’t, except I think he is kinda sick of my game. When we really do have a baby, I will bring this one up again. I love names that start with a vowel.

6. Drey - Yet another of the husband’s favorites. I put it in the same category of Sherrod. I think my son would grow up to be in a boy band like O-town if I named him Drey.

7. Sidney - Another of my faves. Have you heard of that really good hockey player, Sidney Crosby? He is probably hot, right? I like how the name is kinda old fashioned and would work well on a cute nerdy boy.

8. Braff and Bow-Wow - Okay, neither of us actually like these names, but they were submitted by friends who were trying to build consensus because they fit my criteria of “B” alliteration and Andrew’s criteria of being obsessed with Zach Braff (#1 man crush) and being just plain odd (therefore sabotaging my name game hobby).

I’m pretty sure I’m missing a few more names, but these are surely the highlights. If you’ve actually made it to the end of this and haven’t de-friended me for being so weird, tell me, do you also play the baby name game and what names are on your list?

(I know, for some of you this is a real-life conundrum, so you should especially play along!)

comments

  1. Totally play this game! I love the name “Tate” for a boy and “Holland” for a girl.

  2. Oh my God, I saw your title in my feed reader and peed a little.

    Hooo. Deep breaths.

I don’t know that we’re having them, but mine are:

Felix - I love, Matt hates. I don’t care, I want my Felix. He’ll grow up to be the arty one who hates us.

Iain - Matt loves, I’m indifferent. I give Matt mad props for going with the alt-spelling. He’ll be Mini-Matt, playing with chemistry sets and math puzzles whilst Felix and I are discussing 80s punk.

Weird that I don’t have girl names, but I don’t want girls. Maybe Madelaine? It’s kinda been done, though. I don’t want anything common. I’ve always liked Anka or Annika. But come on - I’m an Anastacia. I have to pass on the The Curse of the Differently Big Name.

Hi, I’m a comment hijacker. Sorry.

  3. I had a pet goat called Magnus once. He was a mean bastard, but I still like the name. The older of my two brothers has the middle name “Barton” which I like, and my other brother’s middle name is “Tasman” which I also like. Holden is the name of a brand of Australian car. To me, it would be like calling your kid Ford or Pontiac. Bennett is too cool. For girls I like Ruby and Olivia.

  4. Because I already have two boys (Judah Paul and Samuel Christian) I ALWAYS ask my husband about girl names and he, too, does not like to play along. My top names are Sophia and Elle/Ella. Our friends were going to name their boy Bennett, but are pregnant with their second girl.

  5. J and I have played this game, albeit me a wee bit more enthusiastically than him. ;)
Dude. When I saw Bow-Wow, I nearly fell over thinking you were serious. Er, not that there’s anything wrong with that name…

Haha! Loving E’s comment, a fellow Aussie, woo! Imagine calling your kid Toyota..

  6. I love to play the baby name game. Michael? Not so much. He’ll humor me every now and then but mostly it’s met with silence. He’s so precious.
We’re in the same boat as you guys. We have no trouble agreeing on a girls name. Actually, we like more than one. (A miracle, I know.) For boys names we can’t agree at all. I want something that’s a little different, but still classic. Right now my favorites are Myles, Hughes, and Owen. Michael’s favorite is David. See what I mean?
When I read him your list he said, “what is it with girls wanting to give their babies last names?” Which he asks me all the time. Oh well. I have a couple years to wear him down. I’ll win.
Also? My comment is sooooooooooo long because it is filled with LUV. Sorry.

  7. We had no problem agreeing on a boy’s name, once we got past “Trey”. He LOVES this name… and all I think of is it may have something to do with the 50+ times he’s seen Phish in concert… hmmmm…

As for girls name, I love Nevah (which was his grandma), but of course it is an old lady name for him. We have finally agreed, but it is top secret for now (hopefully like a week more).

As for wanting a boy or a girl, here’s our dilemma: of course I want at least one little girl. Who doesn’t want that little mini-me, that they can take shopping and dress up, but… have you seen teenage girls at shopping malls lately?! Or sat in front of any in church? Or had a co-worker with teenage daughters?! Yikes! And if we have a girl, we will be all organic… no way is my daughter getting extra doses of estrogen in her chicken or other hormones in any thing! If I didn’t need a bra until I was 13, neither should my daughter!

  8. Magnus…I guess if you named your kid this I would be nice…I guess, but please don’t do it. For the sake of the child, just don’t. :-)
By the way, I also play the baby name game. I’m obsessed with it and like you, very methodical. I take it very, very seriously, but Edgar will only play along for about 5 mintues.

  9. I have to admit that I play this game alone.
Although sometimes Tim surprises me and comes up with a name on his own.

We both love Aidan, for a girl or a boy.
I love Drew or Drea. (An in front not included)

And Olivia! I would love to call her Livie!! Or Libby!

    Um, by the way Sherrod??!!

  10. Oh, I play this game all the time in my own head. I also think of pet names for pets I’m not going to be getting anytime soon (let’s hope! already over my limit!)

For girls, I LOVE Madison and Morgan. Problem: My cat is named Madison. I didn’t name him, but I love the name, so he kept it. Even though he’s a boy and having a cat and a kid with the same name would be problematic.

For boys, I love Michael. Problem: It’s my brother’s name. So either I need to get 2 boys and the other one after my other brother, or I get to deal with Kristopher sulking about how I love him less for the rest of my life.

Sorry, but Magnus? No. Just no. I love Owen and Bennet!

  11. Bau- Wau you mean…I am laughing outloud.

Braff is great- with a long A… I mean, you named your cat Howie, it’s not that far off.

If you’d just listen to Liz, Matt and I, all your name issues would be solved, just saying….

  12. Hey I just posted about this the other day! Looks like LOTS of people play this game. But, after a few days, I have to admit - Memphis Ryan is growing on me. Gah!

For girls, I don’t know. Hubby is only interested in boy names because he insists we WILL have a boy. I tell him “It’s up to you, shooter.”

  13. I love Magnus, too. It’s a good combination of manliness and softness, I think. Plus, it’s Scandinavian, like me!

I keep trying to convince AS to like the name George. (I’m thinking Clooney here, not Bush.) He claims that the child would be taunted as “Georgie Porgie.” I find this a strange comment, as AS has the same first name as a well-known cartoon character, but was never really teased about it.

I have had a girl’s name in mind for, like, ever. AS is in favor of it, but it’s also his aunt’s name–so if we had a daughter with that name there would be two J— A—’s in the family.

Also, don’t be shy about your baby name game… look at me, I shamelessly engage in it and we’re not even married. Or engaged. Or living together.

  14. Oh goodness, I will post my names later, but I just had to say:

“You(’ve) heard of that really good hockey player, Sidney Crosby? He is probably hot, right?” is the BEST justification for a name ever.

    Probably :)

  15. Oh, Janet. You shouldn’t have asked this question. My poor child is still waiting for a name, and my list is increasing in number, rather than narrowing down!

So, here you go. My list, copied and pasted from my running email called “Baby Name Options.”

    Bennett (Ben)
    Gavin
    Kyle
    Aidan
    Ethan
    Ryan
    Connor
    Nicholas
    Andrew
    Nathan
    Luke (Lucas?)
    Landon
    Owen
    Adam
    Sean
    Brandon
    Tyler
    Liam
    Ian
    Riley
    Brendan
    Seth

    I.HAVE.ISSUES. Especially with decision-making.

  16. D and I play this game too–we have since we were dating to be honest. We like boyish names for girls: Dylan and Mackenzie (but I can see changing my mind for something more delicate) I like Olivia which he thinks is gross. We have a ton of boy names picked out: Jackson, Delaney, Griffin, Lincoln and Hayden (the last two are still under discussion) Glad to know so many other women play this game, I thought I had too much baby fever or something!

  17. We’ve picked Owen for our next baby should he be a boy. And Alice for a girl.
And The Mistah and I play this gave frequently.
Henry was named a few months before he was conceived. And in a very Adult Contemporary Twist, Henry was named by his grandmother and I in the parking lot of Jones Beach at a Sting concert. Yes, it’s true.
Although we’ll always testify that Henry was named for both of his paternal great-grandfathers.

  18. If you are looking for B names, I have cousins named Brad, Bryce, and Blake. I am not necessarily advocating any of those names; I just thought I would share them! (My cousins’ last name starts with a B too, FYI.)

Magnus? No. Too close to Magnum.
Holden? Seems like you could make a lot of jokes like, “What exactly are you holdin’?” Ok, that is not a good joke, but I am not good at teasing.
And Sherrod? That is just weird. Almost as bad as my husband’s suggestion: Abraxis.

I do like Owen and Sidney though!

  19. Totally fun and amusing post. Of them, I vote for Owen. Biased because I like said celeb. It also has a good omen, because one of my fave elementary school teachers (positively saintly) had that name too.

Magnus evokes connotations of royalty for some reason. Because it makes me think of castles and such. Your future son could become like a prince :)
Pass on Bennett. It DOES have a nice ring, but I’m biased. Maybe because it’s the name of a bad Catholic high school in my area (spelled differently) and also the last name of a boy I turned down in jr. high :(

  20. My Hub-E and I have played this game many time and have our names picked out for the if and whenever’s that might someday come along. (Note: These names are copyrighted!)(I jest, of course, but I’d hate to think that we thought up some good original names and then have them be taken over. Then again, I’m sure we aren’t the first to think of these names.)(Anyways.)

For a boy, the first boy would be Layton. This probably sounds like an odd name, but my Hub-E is a rock climber and there is a famous rock climber with a personal story that hits close to home for Hub-E with the name of Layton. And I like it too. The only problem is that any and all of our boys have to have the same middle name that Hub-E and his father and his father have and so on: Bowditch. Yeah. Kinda weird. But it has grown on me. Except it makes me think of Beowulf. We both like Scandinavian type names. Other boy names that we (I) like are: Soren, Roran, or Ronin (he doesn’t like Ronin).

For girls, our first girl will be Chamanioux, (sounds like Shawmunee) after the French mountains, since my name is after California mountains, the Sierra’s (except mine is spelled much better, I thank you, haha!). He likes the middle name Primrose, but I’m faltering on this one. I’d rather go with a French middle name like Adele or something. I also like Cheyenne, but my sister would kill me if I named a girl that since she has already claimed that name.

  21. I may be kicked off the Politically Correct band wagon forever for saying this but I think your hubby has a thing for traditionally… African American sounding names???? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just that any child you two produce is going to be SO FAR from African American its really comedy to think about.

We have waited 9 long months to tell people our baby name so I can’t reveal it here but I must tell you we had an incredibly easy time agreeing on it. Weird huh? I sure hope she fits the name when she come out or we’re in big trouble because we don’t have an agreed upon back up. Or boy name either for that matter (in case all those ultrasounds were wrong.) I do like Owen - would you be very mad if we had to steal it. :)

  22. i’m delurking because the baby name game is one of my favorite games to play (even though i don’t plan on having kids for a loooong time).

for boys, i love the name henry…but i already used that name on a cat, so i would feel weird naming a kid that. i also like jack, and reilly…unfortunately those are kind of trendy names now.

for girls, i like Clancy and Grace. I also love the name Genevieve, but with the french pronunciation (jhen-vee-ev)…but i’m sure her whole like she’d be called gen-a-veev.

i could go on and on…i’ve been buying baby name books since i was 12. that’s weird, i know.

  23. I am like Kelly on this one…I had issues and could not come up with a name for our little guy. Of course we finally did. But yeah, I think the hardest part about being pregnant is coming up with the name. Seriously.

I like names that aren’t “made up”, but that are also not used a lot. I think Owen is becoming more and more common. Which is a minus for me.

I really, really like old Jewish names. You know, Ira and Ari. And I may use both of them, if I ever have another kid.

  24. Oh man, I totally missed the party on this one. JG hates the name game, but I don’t mind the hatred because it just means that he’s not chomping at the baby bit, if you don’t mind that kind of violent metaphor. Whatever.

Being the victim of a weird name, I always stray toward solid, grow-with-you, easy-to-nickname names. None of these weird spellings, surname-as-first-name, or gender unspecific names for me. Call me boring, but I hated having my name misspelled, mispronounced, or mistreated. Plus, our last name is enough of a handful; the kid can only deal with so much.

Nowadays, JG and I play the dog name game, which is almost as fun. My favorite is Walter, but he doesn’t like it. Boo, hiss.

Oh, and responding to your actual list? I love Holden because we know a little boy who is the sweetest little Holden ever. But I’m making an anxious face about Magnus. What if it shortens to Maggie?

  25. i love this game. but i never do tell b/c i don’t want anyone to steal my ideas!
    boys: sawyer, sullivan, darby
and i never remember the girls names i come up with. maybe b/c i hope i have all boys someday.

  26. Hm, I don’t have kids, or pets, and have no intention of having either for quite some time. (Although I have plants and I name them). But I do have a few favorite names:

boys: Connor, Bradley, Mark, Hayes (all family names)

girls: Aidan, Harley (yes, I love them)

love it but wouldn’t ever name a child: Ellemosynary (ella-moss-a-nary)…means “charitable” and she would go by Ella… but I can’t justify the hardship she’d encounter trying to spell her name in kindergarten. :)

  27. I am de-lurking as well just to play along. We have always played this game as well. Now that we are expecting for August - all of the names that I used to like are no longer “good enough” now that we will actually be putting one to use. It is so much more pressure than I ever thought it would be to name a child. So much harder than naming the dogs…
For boys - Jackson, Rory, Max, Miles
For girls - Zooey, Mia, Hadley, Sophie

  28. Magnus makes me think of Pompei Magnus from Rome on HBO. He totally got his head cut off.
Sherrod is an absolutely not. No way. I can’t explain why. Just no.
Owen is a fantastic name. Love it.
Drey is another no. It’s like someone smushed Drew and Trey together into something awful. What about Drew? Drew is so much better.

I’m all out of time right now, but I will be coming back to read these comments and supply my own name game ideas!

  29. Ack, don’t tease us with titles like that! hehe :)
We play this game too. We had Oliver’s name chosen months before he was even conceived. And now we have our future second child’s first name picked out (a boy name and a girl name–and no, we’re not telling anyone :) sorry!) even though it’s like 2 years away.

I really like Owen. But I’m sure whatever name you choose will be great when the time comes! :)

  30. Arrrgh! I had this huge long comment sooo long ago and it got…demolished. Here’s the shorter version:

We totally play this game on a semi-regular basis (why, precisely, ah do not know) Scotts’ picks for a boy are: Stirling Edge (after a Formula One driver and U2, also sharp things) and Jordan, which I like, but don’t love.

Girl: We both love Grace, but it’s been over-used these past few years.

My Boy names: Dane*, Sam, Dylan, Jason, Caleb and Brock. (More or less anything short, easy to spell and pretty basic and “manly”.)

My girl names start with the embarassing middle names: Lilly/ian, Rose, Calla, Poppy- all names I love, but wouldn’t saddle my kid with for a first name.

First names include: Arden, Jillian, Holly (but having the initials H.H. is weird). In short: We’d argue for the entire 10 months up to and including the delivery, about a name.

    Love: Owen, Holden, Sidney.
    Mangus: Mmmmm…Angus.
Sherrod: Who shot the…Sherrod? I swear it was in self-defense.

  31. I’m back! But after reading all those comments I couldn’t possibly share our boring ole potential baby names. Plus I feel a little like Meghan — after having the names picked out for awhile, the thought of actually putting them to use (not that that’s happening anytime soon. just sayin’) makes them seem not good enough.

I will share a potential middle name for a girl that we have — Autumn. The story behind it is this: Tim’s little sister said, “What name would you get if you stuck Audrey and Tim together? … Autim!” Only there’s no way I could ever spell it Autim. It would need to be Autumn. I never liked it as a first name, but as a middle name I kind of love it.

The dog name game is way safer to play. I’ve always liked Sampson — Sam or Sammie for short. And RA’s idea — Walter — is one of the best dog names I’ve ever heard. A friend of mine once had a cat named Larry, and she sure wasn’t lying when she said “He’s SUCH a Larry!” That was the most Larry-ish cat I’ve ever met in my life!

  32. Dude.
Did I dream that I posted a comment here?
    Because I thought I did.

    I love Owen and Aidan.
And Magnus is growing on me.

  33. Ummmm, my stepson’s name is in your top 5. Don’t name a kid Magnus as he will have to live up to that in the Jr. high showers.

I like “nature” names. Arbor, Stone, Creek, Cricket etc. There tons of good ones that are masculine.

I swear on a stack of Bibles though I would have fought tooth and nail if we had another child and he was a boy for “Danger” being his middle name. Since my initials are JDL as are my dad’s He was going to be Jett Danger L.

    ~Jef

  34. Crap … I know it’s “There are” not “There”.

    ~Jef

  35. My vote is for Sydney, or Sidney, or however you prefer the spelling. He’ll grow up with an odd fascination with Australia, which will surely lead him into an interesting life.

    Also, Sydney is unisex.

By the way, I found your blog because I searched “love is blonde.” I think it’s very clever and I was about to write an ad along those lines. Do you know there’s also a t-shirt with that phrase:

    http://www.crookedmonkey.com//CDA5240F87574D8387EBDE8FEC733210/store/s tore.asp?nProductID=18846

  36. I sat next to a guy from O-Town on an airplane once.

Anyway, I like Liam, which is the end of William, which is my husband’s name. That’s what I’ll name a boy should I ever have one.

I’m thinking no to Magnus. Not bad, exactly, but not good either.

What are your favorite girl names?

  37. Ovechkin is better than Crosby. So go with Alexander?

  38. I love baby names. And dog names. And cat names.

I have not really discussed names with my boy too much (trying to get him on the engagement and marriage bandwagon, then will worry about babies.)
My first choice for a boy is Phillip Andrew (Phillip for my beloved Papa and Andrew because I love it- it’s also CP’s middle name)
I did want to name a girl Catherine Grace, but CP’s parents named their dog Gracie and I refuse to use Grace for that reason. CP is totally unperturbed by the idea of using the name Grace even now when I told him I would NEVER use the name now- what would I say to our (potential) little girl, “Of course you weren’t named after Grandma and Grandpa’s dog, honey”???
I also like the name Noah for a boy, but CP didn’t seem to thing too much about it when I mentioned I thought it was a nice name. I also like the name Liam, but don’t know what I think of it with CP’s last name.
I like Caroline and Emilie for girls.
    I’m into classical names.
P.S. I like Holden, Bennet, Owen,Sidney. Not so much on the others…

  39. We’ve been playing this game since we were just dating. My old roommate used to think we were weird for talking about it, but it looks like we were in really good company.

My vote is for Bennet. I’ve always loved that name.

  40. I just had this conversation with another friend of mine who is also not pregnant. First, I would like to say that I totally heart you - but these names, they scare me. A LOT.

But then Mark likes the name Mark Anthony and it really makes me think of a that little AIDs patient husband of J Lo’s. So not happening.

I like old fashioned names, like Betty, but I probably wouldn’t do that to a kid. ::sigh::

I’ve pretty much resigned myself to, there aren’t any boy names that I LOVE, so I’ll let him pick if that’s the case - giving myself veto-power of course, being that that wiggly little bastard will not be coming out of him. I think that’s totally fair. And the girl name. Already picked out. I’m not changing it. :)

  41. Magnus is the name of “The World Strongest Man.”

Can the next posting be devoted to Scrubs and how Elliot’s BFF is from AKRON? I bet Andrew wishes he would have come here!!!

  42. If I knew Felicity/Keri Russell/Melanie/Eliot’s BFF were from Akron I’d have been there. But she totally shut down my man JD, so maybe not.

  43. Is that…..THE Andrew? Andrew? Your wife….she rocks. I never knew how cool Akron was till I started reading here.

  44. yes, that is “THE Andrew” who, along with Alexa hijacked my baby name thread to discuss Scrubs. Now you see what I mean when I say he hates this game? :)
    But Akron still is cool.

  45. Mr. P and I have had discussions about this, too. Since we both speak Spanish, and his family doesn’t really speak English, I thought it would be fun to give our kids names that can work in both languages. Belen is one of my favorites for a girl. It is also Spanish for “Bethlehem” but is also a common girl’s name. I also love Penelope. For a boy, my first choice is Matias. Pronounced Ma-tee-as. Magnus is okay, but it does sound like a name that a famous actor would give his kid. Owen is a cute name. Mr. P loves the name Sofia, but I think it’s been way overused in the last few years and I want our kids to have more unique names. Otherwise, I would have totally gone for it. Isaac is another top choice for a boy…

  46. Bubba had a mandate before we got married that if we have a son his name will be Preston (after Bubba’s dad.) Luckily, I am totally in love with this name. We are thinking Amelia for a girl (after my G’ma.)

My favorite of yours are Bennett and Owen. So cute.

  47. Hey,

I’m one of Alison’s friends, and read your blog when I can. But I digress.

Right, Baby Names. My husband and I are not planning on having kids but I’m obsessed with names. To the point where I bought the Baby Name Wizard book. That’s right, I bought a baby names book. (note: Stupid book doesn’t even have my name in it). (other note: Really, I like this book, it’s way better than other baby name books).

Not so hot on the Magnus (which means “great” and is a Scandinavian hit). But I do think Bennett is awesome (so versatile. plus you could say you were inspired by Pride and Prejudice). There’s also Beckett and Brannock since you’re looking for B’s.

And I agree with Alison–the names your husband likes seem African American (though honestly when I saw Sherrod I thought it was more Muslim).

  48. I must admit my husband David is way more into this game than me. He wants to name the kids after pencils! Eberheart Fabin (sp?) and Dixie Tacondaroga..or something weird like that.

I like Tallulah, Pearl, June. I tend to enjoy Southern names, and just googled this for your pleasure. Baby names for a Southern Belle

    take care,
    -Wendy

  49. Sherrod…sorry but ewwww.

I love the baby-name game. My husband never really like it of course.

We did agree on Gavin for a boy, although there were many others I liked. He always pushed for D names, Damian, Devon etc. Me, not so much.

We also like Sebastian for a boy.

For a girl though, it has always been RYLEE.

Now, if only there were babies for these awesome names….
