my dc
May 6th, 2007 @ 11:33 pm | dc | Post a CommentI am taking a cue from Janet at Slice of Pink and RA and copying Real Simple’s My Hometown feature. I’m no expert on the city I live in and I’m definitely not made of money so my answers may seem kind of plain. If you want to give me a month off of work and an unlimited expense account I think I could spice them up a little!
My Washington, DC
Age: 25
Occupation: Non-profit Development
I lived there for: 3 years
I lived there because: My husband and I both got jobs here that have something to do with U.S. politics and policy
My neighborhood: Kalorama Triangle
My favorite restaurant: Afghan Grill in Woodley Park
If you go to this restaurant, be sure to order: Kadu buranee, which is sauteed pumpkin topped with with meat sauce and yogurt, and comes with delicious buttery rice
My favorite museum: There are so many to choose from here in DC, but I guess I’ll have to go with the Air and Space Museum since it’s the one I’ve been to more than once
My favorite tourist destination: The west end of the Mall anchored by the Lincoln Memorial
Best insider spot: I like the Reef in Adams Morgan, a three-story bar with yummy beer, organic food, a rooftop deck, and darts
My favorite area: I love going running in Rock Creek Park and in the adjourning neighborhoods with all the foreign embassies. I also love Dupont Circle for people-watching.
Best place to go shopping: I don’t get there often, but probably Georgetown.
When you visit, don’t forget to pack: Shoes you can walk in all day long
The one local cuisine you should try when you’re in town is: Chili dogs and chili cheese fries from Ben’s Chili Bowl
The best way to get around: Walking! This is probably why I know the areas closest to my apartment the best. Metro is not a bad second choice, and driving can be downright miserable.
If I had to describe this city in one word, it would be: International
I tell my friends to stay at: If not on my pull out couch, then in one of the fun and funky Kimpton Hotels around town
The one thing most outsiders don’t know about this city is: Residents of DC pay the same federal taxes as everyone else but do not have representation in Congress.
They say “Virginia is for lovers.” So fill in the blank: Washington, DC is for museum lovers and people who love Sunday morning political talk shows.

Great summary! The ribs at The Diner are also pretty spectacular… Mmmm. I know the first place I’ll be headed when I visit again NEXT month. Woo!

Sounds like a fun place!
Gosh, Sydney is so big I don’t think I could actually give this survey justice!

i *loved* going to rock creek park when i lived up there. it was near where my grandma lived. have you gone to wheaton park? best park ever. and it has a beautiful botanical garden, which, incidentally, is where my parents got married. oh, and have you tried ledo’s pizza yet? if not, you must. that is seriously the best. pizza. ever. no where near greasy.

Good call on the Reef- my favorite meeting place. I’d also like to give a shout out to Matchbox.

Ooh, I think I might take a few nudges from this list for my long weekend in DC this summer! My sister thinks it’s odd that we’re planning the whole thing around food, but I’m okay with it.

Hooray for this post. It got me even more excited for our September trip to your hood. And guess what?? We’re totally staying in a Kimpton hotel. Yippeee. I’m glad you approve.
I think I may just play along. Thanks for the good idea.

Ooooh! I love this! Will most likely borrow the idea sometime this week. I went to DC quite a bit when I was in high school, I was a political science nerd and we’d go for tours and stuff. My favorite place was Georgetown and the neighborhoods surrounding the university. I fell in love immediately and actually cried when I had to pack up my suitcase. Sigh… must return, and soon!

This is so great! I might have to do this on my site and start a chain reaction of My Hometowns!

It sounds like fun and it’s only a few hour drive from my house. There really is no excuse why I haven’t visited yet.
If you think your answers are boring (which they are not) mine truly would be lame-o.

This is such a good idea for a post. The pumpkin with meat sauce and yogurt sounds… interesting, but I will take your word for it that it is good.

[...] I loved this post on baby names, and clearly you all did too because it hit a comment record for me. I told you all about my city, which I should probably update for my new ‘hood! Will you still be my friend when I confess that my yard sale was seriously a highlight of my year? I feel like one major success of 2007 for me was decluttering, and the yard sale was the main way I did that. That post also got me my one and only (so far) shoutout on DC Blogs. What to call your in-laws was also a hot topic. At the end of the month we took a road trip to the Carolinas, which was awesome. [...]
