on the road again

Have I really already been on vacation almost a week now? Oh how time flies when you are laying on the beach. Tomorrow we’re leaving South Carolina to drive up the coast to visit a college roommate in Wilmington, North Carolina. But first, a few pics from the first part of the trip.

I had all these grand plans for documenting our road trip. Unfortunately, I was the driver the whole way down and left the photography duties to those less familiar with my camera, which means our “Welcome to ___________” photos included no actual welcome signs and all trees and bushes. Like these, which I swear were taken on the VA/NC and the NC/SC border.

We’ve spent our days sitting on the beach (no photos, because OMG we have been eating SO MUCH FOOD), eating so much food, attempting to golf, and reading books. I’m on to my third memoir already!

And did I mention the FOOD? Weight Watchers is beaming my name in spotlights into the sky for when I get back. Today the damage was done at Momma Brown’s Bar-B-Q.

Momma Brown's Bar-B-Q

Momma Brown's BBQ

  1. Rice
  2. Dirty rice with some kind of sauce
  3. Zucchini (probably in lard)
  4. Mac ‘n cheese
  5. Green beans (again, probably in lard)
  6. Corn
  7. BBQ Pork in mustard sauce
  8. Hush puppies
  9. BBQ Pork in vinegar sauce
  10. BBQ turkey
  11. Fried okra
  12. Sweet potatoes
  13. Coleslaw
  14. Salad with ZERO nutritional value

All you can eat for $7.99! I should probably just run back to DC to burn off the calories.

In more exciting news, I got a text from Alison that her water broke and she was off to the hospital. Maybe her baby and Kelly’s baby will share a birthday! Here’s to wishing them happy laboring thoughts!

  1. Sounds like an awesome vacation - and I insist you put all WW related thoughts completely on HOLD until you get back. That’s an order, missy.

Omg.. craving Mac n Cheese and all your fault! :P

  2. Yuuuum. Lard… And also? Hush Puppies are a shoe brand in Australia. The fact that you have a food (group?) named after them grosses me out!!!!

  3. Oh my goodness, love the BBQ. I had never had hush puppies before we went to Williamsburg and - YUM! When I read the sign for Momma Brown’s Bar-B-Q, I love that:

    A) I thought they sold sandwiches by the pound
    B) “Delicious” and “Pit Cooked” totally go together

(”I don’t think you should put the word ‘pit’ on a wedding invitation, George.” Anybody?)

Sorry, my brain is all over the place. One last thing. I totally sympathize with you about not being able to let go of documentation duties. I get my camera back and I’m like, who the heck took these?! But, then the down side is that I’m hardly ever in the pictures when my camera is caught in my death grip.

  4. The bad news: lard. The good news: at least you had tiny portions of each! It can’t be THAT bad… At least you didn;t have, say, a VAT of lard. Now that? Would be bad.

PS: I am so jealous. I’ve always wanted to try BBQ in vinegar sauce. No such thing exists in Minnesota.

  5. I am so jealous. I want to go on vacation.

Joel took pictures just like those when we were driving in British Columbia. Men do not understand the concept of from-the-car pictures.

  6. I totally get your reference to Father of the Bride RA! Sadly, it is one of my favorite movies.

I am sad I missed the adventure of eating at Momma Brown’s, but my waistline is better for not going! Have a great time in North Carolina and safe travels.

  7. I miss going down to NC with my family.
I love the Outer Banks man so much.

    That food looks awesome!

  8. Yummmm. Beach vacation AND good food. Who would have thought it could be?
    ;)
