love & hate wednesday

love: Life is busy! life is moving! so many things to tell you about!

hate: I sit down at the computer, ready to write, and my mind blanks. Is it Friday yet?

love: Speaking of Friday, this weekend I’m going to Pittsburgh for a weekend with my ladies. Oh yes, it will be a reunion of our non-sorority. Anyone have any advice re: Steel City? And also, will I get made fun of if I keep calling it “Steel City”? It just sounds so….hot.

hate: As of this weekend, we will have lived in the new house for a month, and the living room is still only half-painted. Don’t judge.

love: The house! I still love it!

hate: The thing that start with an “mmmm” and ends with an “ortgage.”

love: Taking free (!) swimming lessons at the free (!) local indoor pool.

hate: I’m such a dysfunctional swimmer that it’s quite possible if you saw me at the pool you’d mistake me for a half-drowned golden retriever, except for the prominent under-eye mascara smeared on my face.

love: Collecting ideas for Christmas presents (both to give and to wish for). I’m wondering who on my list would love these penmanship notes as much as I do?

hate: I think I spent half my Christmas gift money on myself today. At H&M. Damn you, cheap apparel!

love: Next to the H&M (and, conveniently, my office) is a new West Elm store. OMG LOVE LOVE LOVE everything.

hate: Cannot afford West Elm!

love: Can afford used West Elm items for sale on craigslist!

hate: Am turning into a craigslist slut. (Probably worth it’s own post, as my collection of secondhand furniture is growing like a weed garden.)

love: Shamelessly relying on the love/hate structure to avoid writing actual content. I love not having an editor!

Leave yours in the comments, my lovelies!

  1. Love: Your loves and hates.
Hate: That I have a cold.
Love: That I’m coming to visit DC.
Hate: That I was offered an awesome contract for a job that I can’t take because I’ll be in DC.

  2. Love: That I can totally steal your post idea today.
Hate: It’s 5.30pm and I’ve not moved a cm towards my treadmill this afternoon.

Love: Looking for jobs in London.
    Hate: Filling out paperwork.

  3. I’m so glad I’m not the only one constructing lists of gifts to give and receive already.

This is sort of outside Pittsburgh, but have you ever been to Falling Water, the Frank Lloyd Wright house in that area? It’s really cool to walk through it, even if you’re not allowed to take pictures.

  4. Love my new bike pedals.
Hate when I cannot unclip my shoes from the pedals and fall over, still clipped into the bike.

PS - “They” say you shouldn’t make any major changes to a new home for a year, so you can live through every season there. I’d say painting is a “major change,” so if the walls stay half painted well into 2008, you’re safe. :)

  5. My golden retreiver has vaginitis.

  6. Hate: That I’ve lived in my house for 2 years, 3 months and 13 days, and still have 8 rooms with wallpaper (counting bathrooms and hallway)! Seriously!

Love: the 2 rooms I’ve redone, and glad I waited to do those too, because my instinct after a year was much better than it was when we first moved!

Love: my little girl has been such a good sleeper lately! And I love getting smiles when I go in to wake her up in the morning.

Hate: that she has a cold. Suctioning out boogers is not fun.

  7. We’ve been living in our house for FOUR YEARS and the bedroom is still half-painted. Painting is hard.

I am also a CL whore. It’s recycling!

I have never been to Steel City myself, but Joel went for work last year and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was and how much there was to do. Have a great time!

  8. Love: Ice-cream cake

Hate: That I have ice-cream cake in my house. No self-control!

    Love: Fall weather, FINALLY

Hate: That our “fall weather” is still like 75 degrees and therefore not really cold enough for jackets or chunky sweaters

Love: Being able to manage my own time

Hate: Wasting so much time and getting behind on everything and having subsequent panic attacks about how behind I am

  9. I have lived in my Condo for almost 3 years… it took me 2 years to get rid of the vertical blinds, I haven’t painted a wall yet (though I have the paint, the equipment and now the time) and a couple of walls have random samples on them to see how they fit in….. That and I still need to do my kitchen…

  10. Pittsburgh: check out Station Square and the Strip District. Station Square has a lot of nice restaurants and a fountain that plays music choreographed to a water show. The Strip has a lot of bars. I second the Frank Lloyd Wright museum, although I’ve never been there. It sounds amazing.

  11. Love: that I got my picture taken for the third time for my work’s website because the picture is so awful ever time (This is a love because I hold out hope that the third time is the charm.)

Hate: that I still have the horrible old picture for a week or two

  12. Love: that my comments are working again!

  13. Love: That I’m actually doing this grad school application thing.
Hate: THAT IT IS TAKING OVER MY LIFE.
Love: Writing grad school essays all night definitely justifies ordering Domino’s Cheesy Bread for dinner and watching crappy TV.
Hate: My coworker just told me about the Domino’s CEO’s politics and I think my cheesy bread days may be over.

  14. I’ve been reading for a while and NEVER comment….Not even on delurk day….but! I live in “the Steel City” and I agree with JP that you should check out the Strip District - espcially Saturday morning, there are great stores and fresh produce - and Station Square does have a bunch of nice restaurants. I’ve been to Falling Waters, but it’s a little bit of a drive from downtown. My first comment is now turning into a book….hope this helps!

  15. Love: That you are coming to visit me in the “Burgh!”

Hate: Talking about accounting and EBITDA and all that fun stuff for hours on end. Blech! My brain hurts.

  16. Hate paying my mortgage every month, but it NEVER EVER seems to get any smaller!

  17. Love that the day is over
Hate that I had the worst.day.EVAH.
    That is it.
Your blog cheered me up though.
    Enjoy Steel City!

  18. The Andy Warhol museum is my favorite. It is eight stories high so it takes a while to go through the whole thing. The Strip District is great and a must see. There was an article in the NY Times on Sunday about Butler Street in Lawrenceville being the new art district.

I haven’t been back to Pittsburgh for a few years, but October is my favorite time to visit.

  19. Love: How cute cute cute my baby girl is these days

Hate: That her Daddy had to work a 12+ hour day today and wasn’t here to help me or see her for more then an hour tonight

  20. DUDE! You’re coming to my town!! (well sorta, I live about 20 miles north) I can’t really give a lot of advice for places to go downtown (I went to college in a small town so when I was ‘going out’ a lot, it wasn’t downtown) but the suggestions other people left are good- Strip District, Station Square, all of the main places. Have a good time, Go Steelers! :)

  21. I have to say I LOVE your love/hate list and it just so happens I can relate to so many of the things in each section! I may just have to steal this idea :)

  22. as i wrote on alynda’s post the other day mine would be all hates right now and how depressing is that?

but i so hear you on the under the eye mascara smudge after a swim. SO annoying.

  23. no real loves and hates but…

I love West Elm too and hate that it is so expensive… also love craigslist…

you’ll love the beauty that I posted today!

  24. I still love the love/hate format. Keep on using is chicha!

    ps.
    love: new house.
hate: new empty house, big mortgage and more mismatched craigslist furniture than one can count. and i’m not talking about you.

  25. I’m jealous you have an actual West Elm STORE!

  26. love: your blog
hate: that i’ve been lame-o, and haven’t introduced myself yet. Hi, I’m Jen, btw
love: old rowhouses, my total passion
hate: everything needs TLC, even the flippin’ window panes
love: chilly October nights on the patio with a chiminea blazing
hate: that it’s been 80+ degrees in DC since last April
