aah-choo!
October 29th, 2007 @ 5:44 pm | domestic | Post a CommentWhen I posted my highly-scientific recipe for taking a week off, I forgot to add in one key ingredient, perhaps because I didn’t see it coming until it was too late: Four days of being knocked senseless and snot-filled by some kind of cold/flu aka The Virus of Death (TVoD). On Thursday night I self-diagnosed a case of the sniffles as allergies, but it was clear by Friday morning I couldn’t blame this on the ragweed. It’s Monday now and I pretty much haven’t left the house since.
The most maddening thing about TVoD (aside from the fact that I haven’t lost 10 pounds without trying, god, can I please get a stomach flu next time?) is that all I want to do is lay down, but that is when I am the most stuffed up and miserable. My sinuses clear slightly when I get up and move around, but each upright step feels one closer to an early grave.
I’m really fun to be around right now, aren’t I?
One thing we finally accomplished this weekend was unpacking the rest of the boxes! (Hurrah!) The only problem is that now instead of 2-ish rooms full of boxes, we have 2-ish rooms that are pretty much empty. And I’m not really sure what I want to do with them.
One room is a bedroom, and I think it will become the guest room, but we don’t have a second bed right now and mattresses are not exactly cheap. The other room is not really a room in the traditional “four walls and a door” sense, but more of a big, open landing. I really don’t know what to do with it. Office? Crafty area? Exercise nook? Library? If $10,000 fell from the sky, I’m sure I could transform it into a pretty cool space, but in the meantime it will remain a kitty playhouse. Which is just a really nice way of saying dustball heaven.
I’m learning that owning a house is really quite expensive. We haven’t had to do any major repairs or upgrades, but it seems like there is always something else to buy. Smoke detectors, furniture, cleaning supplies, paint, etc. It’s also quite time consuming. There’s always something to clean, something to organize, or yardwork to be done. And we’ve only lived here for a month!
A few years ago, most of my disposable time and disposable income went into nice things for myself. Shopping, pedicures, logging hours at the gym. Now, it seems like my shopping list and my to do list center around the house. Is homeownership the first step to frumpdom? I’ve already given up manicures and pedicures so we can pay the mortgage, but is it only going to get worse? Once the expensive heating bills pile up from the cold winter months, will I stop paying for haircuts, makeup, and decent clothes? I seriously hope not, but I fear I am standing atop a very slippery slope.
No time to ponder it any more now, as I’ve got to go sweep up some dustballs and make dinner for the husband. Before you go, head on over to Jessica’s blog and wish her a happy birthday!

I’m so excited to see you posting again!
Hopefully your house expenses will go down in the next couple of months and you can keep buying fun shoes.
