olden days

I feel like a Pioneer Woman right now.

Well, a pioneer woman who has a Macbook with 75% battery power, a mini bag of Baked Lays, and pair of Simon Pearce glass candlesticks.

But a pioneer woman nonetheless!

Tonight as I trudged home in my high-heeled boots in the freshly fallen snow, I noticed that something about my street looked a little funny. I figured it was just the picturesque tree branches, just three days ago covered in fiery red leaves, now coated with perfect white icing. Then I noticed all the cars were gone. Where did everyone go? Only then did I notice the darkness and realize that the power was out.

I fumbled my way inside wondering where the heck we keep the flashlight in this house of very little closets and storage. Turned out to be unnecessary because we have enough candles around here to last all night.

However, it’s very cold. And eerily quiet. So this is what my house sounds like when the giant tv is off, I never knew.

I figure I should try to use these few hours (dear god, hopefully not more than a few hours, okay?) to get something hearty and useful done. Perhaps wash the linens with a washboard and a tin tub? Nah, too cold. How about sew some quilts to get ready for a long winter? Except I have no idea how to sew by hand. What did pioneer women do, anyway, other than wear really long skirts and hope their dozen children didn’t die of typhoid fever?

I know! I’ll ask Google! Except, shit, my stupid internet is out.

I guess I’ll just lay here and read a magazine by candlelight, curled up with my two kitties, and wonder who got kicked off tonight’s America’s Next Top Model. Just like they used to do back in the olden days.

  1. Oh my gosh, this is just like reading a pioneer journal!

  2. No power outages in Bmore! And 70% cheaper! You should move.

Do you want me to tell you who got kicked out of ANTM? No. Boooo.

  3. In the game “Oregon Trail,” the pioneer women had to help their families fjord rivers and keep the oxen from escaping. But that would have been a really cold and miserable experience, so I’m glad you didn’t do that!

  4. Mm, it’s like on the prairie, with Mary, Ma, and Pa. Did you have to shoot a bear for your dinner? :)

  5. At least you won’t have a high electricity bill if you’re not using any electricity!

  6. Haha! I think the pioneer women went to bed when it got dark. Get thee to bed!

I guess the internet must have come back on so you could post!

  7. This post could only be better if you were posting it from the Oregon Trail, alas, that is not the case. I hope you survived the night sleeping on your straw mattress.

  8. Haha, also in that game, Oregon Trail, the pioneer women and their kids would periodically get dysentery and you’d lose at least 3 days. Am I the only one who played that game at school in computer lab? :)

  9. Wow, talk about taking a trip back in time! I’m glad you were able to tap into your pioneer-woman roots to survive the night.

Last time our power went out, I was actually kind of excited to go all-out with the candle light. And just when I got the last candle lit…the power came back. I was bummed.

  10. Sounds like you had an interesting night! :) Do you have your Christmas Tree up yet?

  11. well thankfully the power should be back on by sunday and you can watch the ANTM repeat!

  12. I’m lost without electricity. Lost.

  13. Haha, I never know what to do when the power is out. Reading? Board games? Drink all the wine before it gets warm? Who knows.

Glad you made it through. :)

  14. Hearing about your missing out on ANTM makes me very sad. :(

  15. Ha ha! The Love Is Blonde Pioneer Journal–I love it! Sorry you had to miss ANTM. I hope your power is back on by now. I don’t do very well with roughing it myself.

  16. Great post! Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I started twitching after 20 minutes. I can go without the TV or even music for hours but I need the internet!

  17. I can see a movie being made about this…

Voiceover (in Hollywood voice): It was a snowy winter’s day in Washington DC, when blog addicted Janet came home to find that her power was out, and the internet was down. (Dun, dun, dun!) But then she realised that her husband’s huge TV was also switched off, and the possibilities were endless…

  18. It’s almost like the Oregon Trail!

Let me know if you need my assistance in hunting rabbits for food.

  19. Can you imagine, like, Colonial top model. LMAO

  20. Rough night. You’ll have to blog about your super awesome survivial techniques, or maybe you could get a show like Survivorman.
