third strike

In the past six weeks I’ve had a cold that knocked me out for four straight days and a flu that ruined Thanksgiving. When I started sneezing and sniffling nonstop over the past 24 hours, I can’t say I was thrilled to see this headline in today’s paper:

If you don’t hear from my by the end of the week, call in the search and rescue teams.

P.S. Do you think this is happening to me because my house is so cold?

P.P.S. It cannot be because I am not taking care of myself, because last night I had a long cardio session at the gym and a smoothie for dinner. Go me! But, WTF?!

  1. whenever i start feeling sniffly, i load up on vitamin c - really load up. and most of the time i can head the cold off so it never really gets that bad.

    hope you feel better!

  2. I don’t know what is going on either. I’ve had 2 killer colds and a case of food poisoning in the past few months. I can’t take any more!

  3. Hey Janet!

I found a new trick that is GREAT! I had the makings of a nasty cold twice already this year and this is what I do. Buy a couple tubes of Airborne. I take one just about every 1/2 hour to an hour. The packaging says no more than 3 a day, but all you’re doing is loading your system with vitamins and minerals…in excess. If you do it right when you start feeling icky and are religious about taking the tablets, you’ll be fine in a day or two MAX! I hearby release myself of any issues associated with not following the directions. I’m not liable if something goes wrong (but I’ve been doing it this way for many colds since it came out and I’m fine!). Good luck and feel better!

  4. Ugh, just in time for Christmas, too. Not fair at all.

  5. So sorry you’re feeling in the dumps. Again. Take care of you. And we’ll call 411 or 911 or whatever it is if we don’t hear from you soon.

  6. Yuck. I hope you don’t croak. :)

  7. I’ve been so sniffly lately too, granted I think it’s allergies. But hopefully you get over it soon, being sick around the holidays is never fun! Feel better!

  8. I totally know what you mean. I’ve been non-stop sick this season. Usually I’m pretty healthy, but I’ve taken sick days and had colds and flu.
    What’s up with that?
It kind of sucks because I’m pregnant and I didn’t want to be a wimpy pregnant person, but I AM!!!!

  9. Hope you start feeling better! :)
I don’t want this to sound like a total slacker comment :)…but sometimes when you’re immune system is down it’s a good idea to take some time off from the gym…there are so many germs there…and sometimes it makes it harder to get well.

Not that I ever need an excuse to NOT workout. :)

  10. Depends on — what temp do you keep your house? We keep it at 62. But yeah…colds SUCK.

  11. You take public transport to and from work right? Unfortunately you are exposed to absolutely everything that your co-passengers have, and their kids, and their…well you get the idea. Are you a bit tired though? Perhaps not getting enough sleep? When I’m super tired all the time, is when I’m personally more likely to get sick. As for the house, mine is purposely cold too (I’m in Montreal Canada, it’s been a titch chilly recently) and I’m not sick all the time. Believe me, little Miss Bronchitis here would be constantly sick if that was the case!

Don’t want to sound like an advertisement, but something I swear by is ColdFx (not sure if you can get it in the US or not) it is a natural thing that you take when you have the first symptoms of the cold, helps build your immune system. The NHL players up here use it apparently (it was created by an athlete) and for this Canuk if it works for hockey players then…seriously though, my mom also swears by it, expensive but has ended many colds of mine really quickly!

  12. Hope you feel better, I agree about all the vitamin C, and I think working out can sometime help fight off a cold… That is so crazy that your friend worked on the “story of stuff” - tell her I think it is great!

  13. I think this is the perfect time to play sick and get others to do all sorts of things for you: breakfast in bed, rubbing of feet, finishing any long, hideous reports. In fact, you should milk it even if you start to feel better- well into 2008!

  14. I always load up on garlic when I feel a cold coming on. It sounds gross but it really works for me.

  15. Feel better, Pal! I think sleep is the best medicine.

  16. So sorry your sicky again! You sound like someone who has a kid! Feel better before you come to visit!

  17. Yikes! That is a scary cold. Umm, and this has been the Year of Sick for me, as well. I have never been the kind of person who gets sick all the time until this year. Now, if I even so much as hear about something going around, much less spend any time with someone who has the thing, I’m getting it.

    Ugh! Wtf, indeed.

  18. Oh no Janet! I visited a dietician lately and she recommended eating different colored foods: eggplant, broccoli, etc to keep strong. I’m not sure but although a smoothie is REALLY good for you with the fruit and all, I think that might not be enough for dinner and you should eat something else with it because you need more nutrients, especially after a workout. Oh gawd, I sound like a mom!

  19. Oh, yeah, I agree with Jenni–take a few days off from working out. Your body needs to “mend” and what a great excuse to not exercise. Maybe something to think about, although I know you don’t want to lose your momentum. Maybe just ease up on the exercise for a couple of days.

  20. I have been fighting off some yucky sinus stuff because work and school have been so busy, but now that is is slowing down, I am sure I will get it.

    UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Sorry you’re not feeling well - hope you feel better soon - take lots of vitamin C and drink some broth and juice…

  22. I’m writing a story about the superbug right now. Don’t fret - experts say the worst pockets are in Seattle and New York City.

But gotta tell ya, this is seriously one of the grossest sets of interviews I’ve ever had to conduct. I was on the phone with a respected infectious disease doc the other day, and I actually said ‘ew’ after he finished a particular sentence.

    Professional!

  23. Maybe go to the doctor? Or drink tequila. That’s all the advice I got. But I will say, I hope you feel better soon. Check in often, you’ve got us all worried now ;)

  24. Lemon tea with a shot o’ whiskey, baby.

I’ve had a sore neck all week and have been self medicating with AS’s leftover muscle relaxers. I know that they’re not “officially” for the cold and flu bugs, but they make me feel GREAT. Try it!

(Just kidding. Abusing alcohol and prescription drugs is wrong.)

  25. Colds just happen. And sometimes they get together and plan repeated strikes. Your ammunity is down when you’re sick, so you’re more likely to get sick. Vicious cycle.
Not to worry. While it is true that many deadly diseases start out with flu-like symptoms, very few flu-like symptomes lead to deadly diseases.
Go to bed, wake up next week, take a hot bath and then everything will be fine.

  26. OMG don’t scare me like that! I too have been sick with a cold, and afraid I’ll be rushed to the hospital any moment! ahh! still love ya though

  27. ugh that sucks! i hope you feel better soon!
next time you feel a cold coming on true coldeeze. not exactly sure of the spelling but basically they’re zinc tablets. they really work!

  28. [...] no responses First of all congrats go out to the recent graduates- my sister received her BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders from my alma mater.  And also to GFF for becoming Dr. GFF!! Second, somehow I caught Janet’s killer cold of death over my sister’s graduation weekend and spent 15 hours in bed from Saturday to Sunday.  CP was my nurse as I spiked a fever.  Brought me soup and a sandwich, ice cream and turned the heat on and off as my fever broke.  And gave up on a romantic evening with his girlfriend alone. In a hotel room. With a king size bed.  And a whirlpool tub.  I’m feeling better and I have GOT to get my Christmas cards done.  I am so behind on this!  In fact, I’m off to do this now… [...]
