just another weekend
January 13th, 2008 @ 11:45 pm | domestic, food | Post a CommentYesterday, as in Saturday, as in the day for SLEEPING IN, we were awoken at 7:00 am by a crew of road workers and their heavy and LOUD machinery right in front of our house. Over the next six hours, they proceeded to tear up our street and then lay down new asphalt. While I’m perfectly happy to have a new road, I can’t recall anything that was wrong with the old road, and boy was it a seriously loud endeavor. It probably doesn’t help that the distance from my sleeping head to the edge of the road is about 7 feet.
All of you parents out there probably do not pity me for my early weekend wakeup, but this is probably the #1 reason we do not have children. We love to sleep in until ridiculously late hours whenever we can. Call us lazy, I know you’re just jealous.
This morning, as in Sunday, which is also a day for sleeping in, we did just that and then I made good on my resolution to run more and eat more local foods. In fact, I ran around the neighborhood and then to the market, killing two birds (or zucchini squashes, if you will) with one stone. I’m hoping to make it a weekend habit. And here is my dinner:
And now for dessert I’d like some oreosicecreamcookiescakebrownies, thanks!
Change of topic: Husband and I are thinking about going on a nice vacation after the election in November. Tell me, where is the best place you ever went on vacation? We want something warm, relaxing, and affordable. Inspire us! We need something to keep us motivated to save money and get in swimsuit shape.

That dinner looks deeee-licious! I want some!

I cannot preach the gospel of cruising enough.
We went on one for our first anniversary and it was the best vacation ever. And really, it’s so cheap because you don’t pay separately for food, entertainment, or a room (also, we just drove to the port in Texas, so we had no flights). We had the best time ever - a perfect mix of tons to do and see and plenty of time to just lay around, sleep in, read, and watch movies.

Oooh, looks yummy!
Go to Mexico! We spent a weekend in Rosarito in the Spring, and loved it. Warm beaches, fresh lobster, and all day long Margaritas baby!

I LOVE Sandals. Although not cheap, November is a more inexpensive time. and again everything is included. Plus they have staff who organize volleyball, board games on the beach, and sometimes drinking games. pretty dang cool!
And 7 am would wake up my baby so I would have been even more upset than you!

Do I even have to say it??? November will be the beginning of the best weather in Key West, and you will be post-Fantasy Fest and pre-New Years.
I love a cruise, because you can see different things and not worry about how to get there. But I always feel nickel-and-dimed (you don’t have to pay for food, but everyone wants a tip, and the only free beverages are coffee and tea, and anything you do off the ship costs money whether you book it through the cruise or not, plus there are constantly art shows and gambling which are obviously not included). I find the ports to all be kind of generic and overall…depressing (poverty-stricken communities with a little “Jamaican market” set up right where you get off the ship to sell you made-in-china purses and maracas). Key West not included, of course.
I’ve never done Sandals, but I’ve heard those are more truly “all-inclusive”.

We took a cruise to Hawaii last summer. So much fun! We hit up 5 different spots on 4 different islands.

Well, you know the obvious problems with MY vacation in Jamaica. I would not recommend it! However, in terms of accessibility to the East Coast, the Caribbean is the way to go. AS’s brother’s family regularly vacations in Grand Caymen, Bahamas and loves it. I’m sure the resort they frequent is more family-oriented than romantic, but there must be more couple-friendly options!

For what it’s worth regarding children and get-up times, at least for the first few years until they get into school you don’t have to modify your sleep-in if you don’t want to. My wife, me, and my boy (10 mo) spent a lovely Saturday morning sleeping till 12:30pm in slumbery bliss.

I also love to sleep in until my body decides it’s time to wake up, which left to its own devices, would probably be around 9 or 10. By that time, though, JG will have vacuumed the upstairs, cleared the dishwasher, and finished our taxes, which will make me feel like a complete loser, so I will want to go back to bed. Vicious cycle.
I also love cruising, but I found that with our 5day/4night cruise, it attracted a certain clientèle who, how shall I put this delicately? Were annoying to be around. Maybe we went too cheap? I don’t know. But other than the thousands of annoying, inappropriately-dressed people, I loved our honeymoon cruise.
If you don’t specifically want something warm, what about an off-season beach place? We had a great time in Avalon, NJ, for a long weekend, and I’ve heard nothing but good about the Outerbanks.

After being on a few cruises, I would so tout the way of the all inclusive. Sandals is great–the food is ridiculously fabulous and it’s adults only (but in a peaceful way; not a nudie sunbathing way). Other all-inclusives are good too. I’d call a travel agent (because they visit them firsthand and know all about them), but then save money and book online.

We had an awesome time in Cabo San Lucas. It’s fairly inexpensive, the water is gorgeous, and the swim up bars are to die for. We had a much better time there than we did on our honeymoon in Cancun.

The only true warm-weather vacation spot (as in, warm year-round, not just warm in the summer) I’ve ever visited is Hawaii. It’s also the only place I’ve gone to for vacation multiple times because it is just THAT awesome there. Unfortunately, it’s really pricey because of flights, but if you have a million frequent flyer miles or a secret life as a flight attendant or something, I’d highly recommend it.
I’m ambivalent about cruising… I did one once and I was bored out of my mind, but I was also alone on the ship with my mom. If you’re looking for something totally relaxing, that might be the way to go… and Baltimore has a big cruise port now!

I know I’ve told you about our perfect honeymoon before, but in case you forgot let me just say… http://www.casaladera.com It’s certainly not expensive, especially considering that once you’re there the most expensive meal of steak and lobster will only set you back about $15 a person, with your average meal costing closer to 5.
On top of the price, gorgeous beaches, blue skies, a private pool, and a personal chef equals Heaven.

Well, if being “cheap” means staying in the States, then I’d say go to Florida. Particularly, south Florida. I’ve been there 3 or 4 times, but always to the Cocoa Beach area, which is nice. But one time, we took a drive down to Miami and walked around Coconut Grove. It was really neat seeing the old houses with the very old coral walls along the streets. We also went to a key or cay or something (I think it’s called Virginia Cay) where this squatter guy named Jimbo has a place where people just hang out or party or get up to no good. We went during a weekday in the middle of the day, so there was nothing going on but some older people smoking fish and playing bocce ball. But we got to see where part of the movie the Fast & The Furious was filmed, which was kinda neat.
Also, I’d loooooove to go down to the Keys one of these days. I think you should go there. Across 7 mile bridge and all that, see Hemingway’s place, and all the pretty brightly colored houses. That’s what I would do.

Oh, I am totally with you on the sleeping in thing. It is just so delicious to wake up, streeeetch, and then go right back to sleep! Bastard road crew.
Anyway, as for your trip, I watched The Girls Next Door last night and they went to San Tropez, and I am now DYING to go there. Is it warm in November/December? I do not know. But it is in the SOUTH of France, so maybe?? Also, is it affordable? Maybe at that time of year it would be, since I’d bet it’s an off season. I’ll bet you have a blast anywhere you end up though!

Ironically, I’m looking at Panama City Beach right now for my June vacation. The condos on the beach are fairly reasonable, and they have washer/dryer and full kitchens. I’m sure the weather is still decent in November.

The best vacation we ever took was on a western Caribbean cruise. We went to Belize and Grand Cayman (and a few other places). Belize was my ABSOLUTE favorite.
Cruising is really affordable especially if you look for deals on line. We used Travelocity.
My hubby is from Hawaii, so we like going there but it really is NOT cheap.

I love sleep too. I definitely try and sleep in as long as I possibly can on weekends.
As for vacations. One of the best beachy places I’ve been is Cabo…however that’s where you had your wedding, haha.
So other than that I would recommend the Gulf Shores in Alabama or Hawaii. I loved both places.

I have to 2nd Tia. The Palace resorts are fantastic. We stayed at Playacar Palace in Playa del Carmen the week after Thanksgiving. It was hands down the best vacation I have ever taken in my life. The staff was amazing, the resort was beautiful (and small, which was very nice), and being that it was between Thanksgiving and Christmas it was almost empty - perfect if you’re trying to relax.
We like Puerto Vallarta a lot too.

2 years ago, my boyfriend and I went to a wedding at Rose Hall Resort in Jamaica. It’s all inclusive and they have a great pool with a lazy river, swim up bar, and two water slides! We had a great time and there were so many great activities going on every day in addition to getting food and drinks 24 hours a day! I highly recommend it.
I also liked the Southampton Princess in Bermuda. It’s a short flight, charming island, and very relaxing.
I went to Aruba a few years ago and hated it. It is too windy, rains every day at noon, the island is kind of run down, and since it’s so close to the equator (and is windy) you don’t realize how hot it is. I normally don’t burn but was in pain after the first day. I know other people that went to Aruba and didn’t like it either.
A friend of mine went to the Cove Atlantis (newly opened) and absolutely loved it.
