project apron
January 21st, 2008 @ 10:32 pm | creative | Post a CommentI’m not sure if you all heard that Akron is the new fashion capital of the universe. You might not believe me, but I was there this weekend for a wine, cheese, and stay-up-all-night chatfest with my girlfriends and we filmed our very own episode of Project Runway.
Heidi Klum told us that our challenge was to create an apron that reflected our own personal style. Tim Gunn said we had 30 minutes to sketch out our ideas and then we’d be going to Mood Jo Ann to purchase fabrics with a coupon and a budget of $20. We had until 1:30 am to finish our designs, and then we’d have to model them down the runway hallway.
The results?
On Liz’s model is a turquoise and brown Martha-meets-modern apron that looks like it belongs in a Vera Bradley catalog with all those fabulous patterned prints. We will call her The Vera.
On Lex’s model is a delicate patchwork of feminine florals that you might find in an Anthropologie store. Or possibly on a Little House on the Prairie set. We call her The Laura after Mrs. Ingalls Wilder.
On my model is a mod black and white half apron with pink highlights and a somewhat out of control bow. Unfortunately, if this is indeed my “personal style” I fear that I belong at Chateau La Rue serving drinks to Tori Spelling’s groupies. Hence, this apron is named The Tori.
It would have been a bit sad if one of us had gotten voted out, so Michael Kors and Nina Garcia called it a tie and we stayed up all night finishing off the wine supply. What do you think, did we “make it work”?

That is such a great idea! I am totally stealing it for our next girl’s night in. And I can’t pick my favorite…if you all decide to sell them, it’ll have to be a three-pack for those of us who never know what sort of mood will strike in the kitchen.

I love the turquoise one! I have been hankering for a cute apron for a while, and one like that (maybe a tad less ruffly) would be fantastic. I don’t really get the half apron…I’m so short that my legs never get dirty, you know?

Hahahah this is CLASSIC. I loved it. Thank you for making me laugh! I personally love the Tori. I would soo wear that apron (i think i just like the big pink pretty bow). Considering I usually would be caught dead than in an apron, thats saying a lot!
Not sure if i’ve ever commented before, so hi!

Fun! I don’t know what you and I could do in this vein - scrapbooking pages? I like yours but honestly I need the top portion… I’m a messy cook. Are you going to be making fries with buffalo wing dipping sauce when I come to visit?

Man, Lex’s apron really does look like it should be in an Anthropologie catalog. Also, your apron is almost cute enough to be a skirt…just change the bottom patterned piece to be black…oh, and obviously make sure you make it go ALL the way around…no need for a “hospital shot”

Those are so cute! I love this idea too. I just don’t ever see myself making an apron. :/ I’m not exactly creative and talented like that.

Your apron is tres chique, but unfortunately I am so splattery when I cook that I need a full one…
You did make it work. Carry on!

Even though the bow is sort of eating your body from the waist up, I love the colours of yours!
I can’t even sew a stinking square out of materials, let alone all the crafty stuff you come up with. You’re my hero!

Sooooooo cute! I love all three, for different reasons: yours is the most fun and funky, the Laura is so pretty, and the Vera looks like it covers more. I own one apron, and while cool (got it for myself in Oz) its nowhere near as cute as those. Tell us, o crafty one, will there be a how-to post??? Please? I can’t cut a straight line or sew with a machine (by hand, yes) to save my life, but this can’t be that hard, right????

Hilarious post! I personally like The Tori because it’s very chic. I’m kind of afraid you will trip and fall and hang yourself with that long bow though. Please remove the apron before your second glass of wine.
You need to live closer so we could craft circle more.

My girlfriend actually created her own apron over the holidays with the help of her sister and mom. It has cupcake drawings ironed on and it makes her body look awesome.

SUPER cute!!! I love, love, LOVE the fabric you used!
And the pink contrast with the black & white is very hip!
I really have no idea how to sew, so I have to ask, did you use a pattern? Or just make your own?

I love The Tori! You did a fantastic job! This is coming from a gay male who has no idea how to cook and I’m pretty sure I’ve never worn an apron, so I’m not sure how much my opinion counts. HOWEVER, it’s really cute, as aprons go. *applauds* What a fun idea!

Project Apron looks so fun, and The Tori looks suitable for dancing (although I guess there’s no back … good for Lil Kim, maybe) . I’ve been trying to get my friends to join me in a version of Iron Chef, with some serving as judges, some as contestants, and of course, commentators. There are still some kitchen logistics to work out, but you’ve inspired me
