love and hate, potomac primary edition
February 11th, 2008 @ 9:57 pm | love & hate | Post a Commentlove: I get to vote in person for the first time ever! and shockingly, it matters (I’ve always voted absentee)
hate: If they don’t give me a sticker that says “I Voted” I am going to be really sad
love: It’s day 6 and I’m still going strong as a vegetarian. Well, a vegetarian who eats things that once lived in the sea (I have no heart for the squid, it seems) and eats cheese that comes from cows who probably live a crappy life (but please do not expect me to ever give up cheese). Thanks for all your veggie cooking suggestions!
hate: lunchtime is the worst for avoiding meat. It’s in all my Lean Cuisines and deli favorites. I’m still working on the best lunchtime replacements. Tomorrow: pita, homemade hummus, and greek salad goodies.
love: an upcoming 3-day weekend
hate: a canceled cross-country ski trip once scheduled for said 3-day weekend (long story)
love: we are making some progress on the house, and even had some contractors come in to give us quotes on a few small projects
hate: one of the quotes we got back was for (hold onto your seats please) FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. I’m still trying to pick myself up off the floor.
love: I like my life. I have a freaking good life.
hate: so why do I feel like I don’t really know what I’m supposed to do with it? Cue ongoing low-level existential crisis alarm!
love: selling stuff on craigslist. It’s the best way to get rid of stuff and make money at the same time, and with relative ease
hate: I might have a compulsion for also buying things on craigslist. Like 95% of everything in my house.
love: when you leave your loves & hates in the comments, my lovelies! Oh, and Go Obama! ![]()

Those home improvement people will totally over-quote you. We remodled our bathroom for $1,000 by ourself. The original quote? Somewhere around $15,000. Crazy.

I always love your love/hate posts. I’m interested to see how you do as a veggie. You might want to check out the Moosewood Cookbook. I have a copy by happenstance and it’s pretty awesome.

Be careful with those little “I voted” stickers. They ruin leather, suede and cashmere, and they become permanent on anything else after about a day.
Just a tip.
May have to blog about this.

Love: Voting in the primaries (and general election) this year - it’s such an exciting year for politics!
Hate: Having to announce whether you’re voting Democrat or Republican in order to get the right voting card - what ever happened to your vote being personal and private???

love: That the election is so exciting.
hate: All the exit polling and hours of stupid reporting slicing and dicing us into younger / older, black / white / Hispanic, change / experience, men / women that turns interesting trends in a complicated decision into cut-and-dried stereotypes.
love: That our boy Obama is doing so well!
hate: That I seriously doubt Hillary would agree to be his running mate. Maybe Biden?

Well, Obama swept Washington, and I’m feeling fairly confident that he’ll do the same in your neck of the woods!
And if sea creatures are still allowed on your menu, Lean Cuisine makes a really great salmon, spinach, and orzo rice meal that I looooove and highly recommend!

Congrats on the veggie-ness. I was veggie for 6 years and vegan for 6 months (so, go cheese!) Smart ones has a 3 (5?) cheese ziti that is actually pretty tastey. And also - cheese comes from Happy Cows in California. So don’t worry.
