my cleaning skills are so fierce

Day 2: Call me a freak show, but all day at work on Monday I couldn’t wait to get home to clean my house. (Please pause because my mother just fell out of her chair. You okay, Mom?) The highlight was organizing my tupperware cabinet.

Day 3: Yesterday was a little harder because I was feeling extremely tired after a day full of meetings. I got home and wanted to plant my butt on the couch. Instead I cooked dinner with the husband. Thankfully, cleaning up our fajita-making mess took almost half of my hour. The other half I vacuumed and measured the upstairs room for my cool floor plan.

What do you think? Right now, the room looks like it belongs in an episode of Clean House. Plus, it’s just about the weirdest shape you can possibly imagine for a room. I need some serious help. I think this floor plan will help me make it useful (exercise room), organized (desk, storage & shelving), and cozy (sofa/daybed).

Day 4: Fessing up. Haven’t done my hour today and it’s 11:48 pm. In fairness, I went straight from work to hanging out with friends for the Project Runway finale. (Speaking of which, I was a tad disappointed with the winner, were you?) And now I’m blogging. I did buy a new lampshade for my hand-me-down lamp, though! And made a decision about the bed I want to buy from Crate & Barrel. Trust me, when I made Rule #3 it’s because I knew I could easily fritter away my hour on buying things, or thinking about buying things and later changing my mind. And then changing it back again only to find out said thing is now sold out. And on and on.

So tomorrow I’ll hop back on the wagon and I promise to do much more than two hours this weekend. What fun is life if you can’t sit around talking fashion and eating Sweet Tarts with your girls?

  1. What an odd shaped room! I like how you utilize the TV. Looks as if you do more on the elliptical than on the couch! It would be quite the opposite if it were my place :)

  2. I’ve been lurking for a bit, found you through Zandria & SoPink Janet, but I have to come out of the woodwork for this.

I seriously got up and did a victory dance when Christian won. He was my fav from day one. But I thought they would pick Rami. Too bad, so sad! Ferosh Coutura strikes again! haha.

  3. I actually was excited that Christian won. I’m not sure why I liked him so much. I only started watching the show a few weeks ago and kept catching the reruns that they show all. the. time. I actually watched last night’s episode in real time. Who did you think should have won?

  4. Personally, I might put the elliptical in that long portion where, I’m guessing, the storage currently is. I’d have the elliptical facing out and strategically place the TV on the wall next to the door to the bedroom. That way, if someone is working at the desk, they can flip around and watch TV, too. Plus, it kind of opens up the square portion of the room. Oh wait, now that I look at it … are those things to the left stairs? If so, ignore my commentary above. Looks great! :-)

PR - nah, wasn’t too disappointed. Though I think he’s more than a TAD bit annoying, his work is really amazing. And he’s ONLY 21. C’mon, you’ve got to give him props for that.

  5. I had my stakes on Jillian as the dark horse, but she was sadly disappointing. I really wanted Rami to win because he actually made a COLLECTION that people could wear at some point, whereas Christian just made a bunch of tight black clothing with beige ruffles. Have we not seen that before?

I think your proposed floor plan looks great, despite the very odd room shape. It will be nice to give the space purpose, instead of just being a pass-through between the two rooms.

  6. Confession: I don’t watch PR.

Confession: I’m always excited to go home and clean. Well, I don’t actually enjoy cleaning, but I love the feeling of accomplishment I get from it. It’s much more fulfilling than my work life. How sad is that?

  7. Your title for this post cracked me up!! That odd shaped room will look really good when you’re done with it, love the floor plan!

  8. How much time did you spend on the floor plan? That should count!

I was also disappointed with the winner of Project Runway. I do think Christian is talented but seriously, would anyone besides Victoria Beckham wear any of those clothes? I personally liked Jillian.

  9. I like the floor plan. :)

  10. hey I think I used that same program to do the layout for our kitchen :)

And you’re right, that room is awkwardly-shaped. But you did a good job pulling it together, I think!

  11. Ooooh! There’s nothing I love doing more than sketching out floor plans! Usually I do mine by hand using graph paper, but this computerized version is quite nifty.

So, I’d do things a bit different (my apoloigies for the “book”):
I’d put the elliptical machine in the place where you have the sofa and mount the TV to the 4′9″ wall that is to the right of the sofa in the diagram. (Even though I realize that it might not be the prettiest sight when you first come up the stairs.)

Then I’d put the sofa in the area where you have the shelves/storage. If the sofa is too wide to fit against that wall, then I’d angle it just slightly in the corner there where the window is so that it faces where you currently have the TV. Then put a potted plant in the triangular empty space behind the sofa, add a lamp and some soft curtains and voila! Reading nook/cozy bright place to nap.

Then I’d put your desk in that nook area against the wall where the TV is currently mounted.

Finally, I’d put the storage/shelves in the place where you currently have the desk. Maybe you could use some of the storage for exercise items/clothes/water/DVDs, etc?

  12. I was disappointed in the winner of Project Runway too. Jillian forever!

What software did you use to make that room layout? It’s so cool!

  13. Wait?
    What room is this??
    I am so confused.

  14. That is indeed a crazily shaped room, but I love your plan for it! I’m only on day 3, so I’m still on that first rush of excitement to Get! Stuff! Done! But I can definitely see the excitement fading next week ;) Keep up the good work!!

  15. That room is really odd, but your potential set up looks good. I want an elliptical machine in my house! Then I’d never have to go to the gym :)

  16. I’m totally going home and creating a virtual drawing or every room in my house!

  17. I really like the floor plan! The shape of the room gives it character and will help it to work for so many things!

And PR — I was slightly disappointed by not too surprised. Christian’s whole collection was either black, ruffled, feathered, or a combination of all of the above. And it kind of irritated me how Posh was kissing his boo-tay so blatantly.

  18. i have to saw your graphing skills are pretty fierce too :)
    lol

  19. and by saw i meant say. thank god it’s almost 5!

  20. Your floorplan is AWESOME. Wow. Also, I love the headboard and am even more excited because it linked to a bedding set that I LOVE and may need to own very soon. So thank you for helping me!

  21. Wow–it sounds like you’re doing an awesome job on your cleaning! I’ll probably wind up missing my walk today and tomorrow because we’re going out of town and will be visiting friends. I’ll try to get it in, but if I don’t, I’m just going to add two days to the end of my challenge.

I’d love to plan on a walk Sunday night if you’ll be around!

  22. ok. seriously. can i borrow some of your motivation? i’ve been home all of 1/2 hour, and i’m firmly planted on the couch for the evening! ;)

  23. That is definitely an oddly-shaped room! On the bright side, at least if you want to have exercise equipment in your bedroom it’s not on view throughout the entire room (like when you have one big room without corners and angles).
