thursday is the new friday

I’m treating myself to a day off on Friday. Despite my workplace’s very generous vacation policy (4 weeks annually with my tenure) I never feel like I have enough days saved up to use them liberally. Because my family and many of my friends live in all four corners of the country, I have to take a vacation to do something simple like see my mom and dad. My fault for leaving home at age 18 and never going back, huh?

Anyway, I recall that RA recently took a random quick vacation that sounded so nice and so…reasonless. No wedding or family function or anything. How refreshing! She doesn’t know it, but she gave me just the push I needed to treat myself to one meaningless day off.

As always, I have grand plans to get lots of things done (cleaning! painting! hey, remember that 21-day-makeover?) but I’ll be happy if I can sleep in a little, grab a coffee type treat, and go on a neighborhood jog. Fingers crossed for no rain please. I’m generally a pretty happy person but I think if every weekend was a three-day weekend I’d be as thrilled as an audience member on the day that Oprah gives away all of her favorite things.

Wanna hear about something I did that was really, really dumb?

To make a long story short, I ordered a little TV for our upstairs area that I’m currently trying to transform into a really cool room. Right after it shipped, I found for sale an even better TV for the same price, so I ordered it too. When TV#1 came, I dragged husband to Costco to help me return it by promising him a hot dog for dinner. Then TV#2 came, and whaddya know, IT WAS A COMPUTER MONITOR. Which I would have figured out if I had, like, READ THE WEBSITE. Which totally explains why this “better” “TV” would be the same price as the first one.

So now I have to return the “TV”#2 (yum, more hot dogs!) and re-buy the TV#1 all over again.

Am dumb. Send halp. But not another TV.

(Have I mentioned that I have everything shipped to work so that someone can sign for it and I think the receptionist is starting to think I’m a hoarder?)

Maybe it’s the lingering daylight or maybe it’s the new Wii addiction, but I’ve been kinda blah on blogging lately. This is fine with me because I figure it’s actually a good thing to have a life. But I do wonder, what is your favorite thing to read when you come here? Is there anything you wish I wrote more (or less) about? If I keep only posting lists of products I want to buy and loves/hates will you eventually figure out that my mad writing skillz are a joke?

  1. As I said, I love reading about the cleaning/painting/room transforming—we rent, so I’m living vicariously through you. :)

    Enjoy your vacation!

  2. ooh, enjoy your time off. I like basically everything you post. :)

  3. The TV/computer monitor is so something I would do. HAHAHA.

Hmmm. I like to read about shoes. There you go.

  4. Good for you on taking a day off! And, you’re totally cracking me up with the whole tv/computer monitor thing. Hilarious!

Personally, I LOVE the lists of things you like to buy! Shopping/potential shopping=very interesting reading!

  5. OPH did a non-vacation too. I can’t remember what she called it but it was cute. I think I would do the tv thing too, especially the “ordering twice” thing. At least one of those purchases wasn’t from ebay, which I have done. Dammit.

My favorites are the house improvement posts. I know you are posting on Flickr but I find these posts/details most interesting. I also like your love/hates.

I get 3 weeks leave plus sick time and I, too, never feel like I have enough to use it frivolously. And even this year, I only have 9 months of work (since I’ll take 3 months without pay) to use my leave and I still am worried about it. Good for you, enjoy your Friday.

  6. haha sorry I shouldn’t laugh at the tv/computer monitor thing, but THAT is funny.

And personally, I like reading whatever people WANT to write. I think you can totally tell if someone is writing something just because they think they should, rather than it’s what they want to write. And I like entries like this- just true, ‘this is what’s happening with me right now’ kind of things. Even if it might be a bit embarrassing ;) hehe

  7. I love reading about the home updates! But i still love reading about your favorite things, now i’m loving esty!!

  8. I know that the LAST thing you want to be known as is a Hoarder- the Horror!

You do ship a variety of things to work. Did the $400 in AT clothing arrive yet? That will be a BIG package :)

  9. i would definitely be a happy person if the work week ended on thursday every week! and i love reading your love/hate posts. keep em coming! :)

  10. I take random days off all the time, and they’re the best thing EVER. I’m not cut out for the 5-day work week.

I get everything shipped to work, too and the front desk staff always ask what’s in my boxes. And I”m like, um, shoes? Two pairs of the same Comiches so I can see which on fits… and then a third pair when I found them on sale at Amazon!

  11. I think that’s fabulous you’re taking a day off just because. Like you, I left home at 18 and have family scattered all over the country. So, my weeks of vacation are often spent seeing them, too. But, back to your day off, check out Jodi’s definition of a “free day” … I think you could use her insights to make the most of your day!

  12. Although we didn’t have a wedding or specific family to visit for an occasion, our Scranton/Poconos jaunt wasn’t exactly reasonless — it was the husband’s spring break. He does not get much time off during the school year, so we grab that time every year. Of course, the summer is a different story, but who’s counting? I hope you enjoy your day off! I feel like 4-day workweeks would be so much more doable, but then I would want a 3-day, and then a 2-day, and then a no-day workweek… In any case, I’m glad that our random trip inspired you to take some you-time!

I used to get everything shipped to my old job, and they knew that if the box was from Amazon, Ann Taylor, or J. Crew, it was for me. No looking necessary.

Blogging is great and all, but having a life is better. :) Trying to document everything can sometimes take the fun out of it, you know? I think I like reading about your everyday life the best. Like when you post a recipe, or talk about the bar with the card games.

  13. I get stuff shipped to my office too. Enjoy your day off!

And as long as you post pictures of SOMETHING, I usually don’t mind what the words are surrounding the pictures. Am easily distracted. Oooh shiny! Ooh pretty colors!

  14. I cannot wait for the summer around here bc we only work 4 days a week.

Three day weekends make me happier and more productive.

  15. I can’t ship things to where I work, but that sounds great. I’m jealous of that arrangement.

And I love seeing what you’re shopping for. You give me good tips for where to shop.

  16. I like amusing stories - as in, cockroach wars, fat cats, and buying a computer monitor you thought was a TV. But I like you any way you care to present yourself!

  17. I love everything you write, of course. I have been pretty blah on blogging for a while, too. The difference is, I don’t seem to have much of a life to explain my blogging blahness. Don’t be too hard on yourself–it’s just a blog.

But, you could show us what you bought at Ann Taylor!

  18. Have a great Friday off and I love your Humane Society Ad to the right……………

  19. Personally, I only like reading stories about cats. Anything else I just tolerate until it rolls back around to cats.

I kid, I kid. I like everything you post; I’ve told you before that you have this bubbly personality that really spills over into the written word. It’s like a dose of happiness and optimism any time I read Love is Blonde!

And I second the Ann Taylor purchase style show :)

  20. That “TV” story is too funny.

The post that got me to add you to the Google Reader? It was the one with the cute aprons. I love anything with photos!

  21. I think that all jobs should only be M-Th. I think we would all be a lot more productive and less stressed that way. Or maybe we would just look forward to Thursdays even more. Either way, I wish it could happen.

  22. Hooray for taking a day off. Good for you.

Sorry about the double tv’s. That sounds like something I’d do.

I love your love/hates. I love seeing your awesome house ideas. Mostly I just love you!

  23. I feel like I would totally mix up the TV and computer too, haha. That’s hilarious. At least you didn’t drag it upstairs and open it and then have to bring it down again, that’s a plus at least.

And I don’t really care so much what you write about either, I love all your posts, you’re a fabulous blogger to read about.

But enjoy the time off! :)

  24. Ha shit I laughed out loud when I read “send halp but no more TVs.”

I’m glad others have bonehead moments too.

I better go back to packing.

  25. Enjoy your random day off! We all need one of those every once in a while. I played hookie a few weeks ago to spend the day with my sister, bro-in-law, and niece. It was AWESOME! Have a wonderful Friday…

  26. Oh, I totally want to take tomorrow off. Boo.

Have a SUPER great day for me, though!

  27. I am a friend of the Ambitious Mrs., and I just have to say that I really love your blog. Whatever you write, I enjoy!

  28. Enjoy your day off…yay! Whoever came up with the idea of working 5 days only to have 2 off was CRAZY!!

    Love the TV/Monitor story…classic!

I think my favorites are the house updates and pics…but it’s your blog…if you feel posting just products and love/hates, do it! Enjoy having a life!! Haha…not that having a blog means you don’t have a life…but you know what I mean!

  29. After reading your post on Thursday, I was so inspiried, I decided I was going to treat myself to a 3 day weekend too, except I was just going to pop into the office before anyone got in to tie up some loose ends. Well, one loose end led to another and I didn’t end up leaving until 3:30 - unshowered and in a baseball cap.

I love all your posts even though I don’t comment much. Miss you!

  30. That is so funny. I too want to be on the Oprah show when she gives away her favorite things. Not like I have ever tried to get tickets, but I am so jealous of those people!!
