I read the news so you don’t have to
April 1st, 2008 @ 12:49 am | blonde moments | Post a CommentI recently discovered and am totally loving Jezebel’s Midweek Madness feature. They recap the week in tabloids so you don’t have to waste any of your own precious time or money on them. Yet you can stay up on just enough gossip to know the difference between Carly Smithson and Harlow Madden. Carlow who?
As I was plowing away my 45 minutes on the elliptical tonight while reading my borrowed-from-the-office Newsweek, I came up with the brilliant idea of giving you an installment of “Newsweek: I read the news so you don’t have to.” Here goes:

It’s official! Cheap wine tastes better than expensive wine. Duh, I’ve been preaching this since college when we mixed Franzia with Ginger Ale to make the wine last longer. But this is about the news, sorry. A six dollar bottle of Vinho Verde, which I have been obsessing over since early 2007 ranked higher in blind taste tests than many $35-$40 bottles. Score one for the cheapies!

Hey, I’m not the only one obsessed with the Macbook Air song by Yael Naim. If you’re not one of the 620,000 people who already downloaded it from iTunes you can (allegedly) download it for free here.

Cover story on surrogate mothers. I guess a lot of them are military wives trying to supplement income. One side thinks it’s great. Miracle of life! The other side thinks there isn’t enough preparation for the emotions involved. Balanced story, lots of pictures of babies and bellies. I’ll be honest, it didn’t capture my attention. But don’t worry, I still think your kids are REALLY CUTE. Your bellies too.

ATTENTION: This is a really sad story about a 28-year-old woman who was killed while working for a non-profit in Baghdad. She had recently fallen in love with the writer of the piece, a journalist and author of a new book about their relationship and her death. Please do not read this story if you are on your period, about to start your period, are emotionally unstable for any reason, and/or cry regularly while watching Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
What would Newsweek be without political coverage?
John McCain:

He is wearing an Armani tie. DOES THIS MEAN HE LUVS THE GAYS?! OMGZ
Hillary Clinton:

Chelsea is wearing a very cute jacket. I’m still not voting for your momma.
Barack Obama:

Wins the Best Font Primary. Exactly how many delegates are awarded in that one, anyway? (The font is Gotham, by the way.)
And this, my friends, is where the magazine my workout ends. Stayed tuned in case I ever again decide that PhotoBoothing magazine pages is a good idea.

Thanks for the pointer to the download of New Soul! I have been obsessed with that song since I first saw the ad. Damn you, Steve Jobs! Now you are also controlling my music tastes!

That story definitely sounds too sad to read, I am so very much an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crier, it’s not even funny.

I love that song as well… not to mention the song/video that they had on the ipod commercials this past fall (1,2,3,4 or whatever it is called).
Thanks for the info on the wine. I always drink cheap wine as well… I’m always on the lookout for good, cheap wine- I’ll have to try this Vinho Verde you speak of.

Thanks for reminding me that I don’t need to read the news, I can just get great updates from people like you.

Thanks for the warning re: Extreme Makeover - there’s no way I’d be able to get through that (I can’t even watch FATHER OF THE BRIDE without bawling, shame!!!). And thanks for the wine advice; I”m always looking for new favorites, and all the better if they’re cheap!

I cried last week when Ryan Seacrest had some singer (the one who sings Love Song) call her dad to tell him she was #1 during the American Top 40. So I think I’ll skip that article!
News recaps are awesome… if you could start recapping Glamour and Yoga Journal too, my life would be complete!

“Chelsea is wearing a very cute jacket. I’m still not voting for your momma.”
haha.
and the whole font thing is funny too. being a graphic designer, i had this discussion awhile back with the boyfriend. we agreed obama’s font took the more modern approach.

Dont you think that song/artist sounds like 3 other songs/artists out right now? How do you feel about that becoming a genre?
Thanks. Now I can have even more complete news conversations with my parents. All their bases are covered- NPR, CNBC and now Newsweek.

Phew, I guess I can cross “read New York Times” off my list for the week. Your synopsis gets right to the point.
PS–let’s drink some cheap wine together someday, okay?

Three cheers for cheap wine! I am a out and open cheapy wine lover and have been for quite some time. Now I need to try out your suggestion. Maybe that was the only part of this whole Newsweek recap I actually paid attention to. Maybe I have a problem?

Thanks for making me not feel guilty that I haven’t gotten to this week’s Newsweek yet! Also, now I can totally skip the really long political articles guilt free. It’s hard to join in the whole primary debate when your state is one of the last to get a say. Why pick with the rest of the country will pick for me?

My roommates have been continually buying bottles of $5 wine every time we go grocery shopping in the hopes that one we find will be the hidden gem of cheap wines. We have yet to find it, but this article has given me hope!
