May 5th, 2008 @ 6:15 pm | miscellany | Post a CommentI’m not sure how many of you took the time to read through the answers to Friday’s test (aka the comments) but boy, they had me rolling on the floor laughing all weekend long.
The absolute best answers were to Question #4: When I was a kid, I had an irrational crush on [fill in the blank].
Many of you had crushes that seem irrational now, but were indeed quite rational, and even common, for a kid in the ’80s (give or take a decade). Answers like Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Jordan Knight, Kirk Cameron, Ricky Schroeder, John Stamos, Scott Baio, and HUBBA HUBBA Christian Bale. (My love for him is well-documented.)
The answers that I was hoping to get, the truly irrational crushes…oh, they were just too good. So good, in fact, that I need help picking a favorite.
Is it:
A) Jackie with her not-a-crush, but an “obsession” with Angela Lansbury. Jackie notes that she loved both Murder She Wrote and a geriatric exercise Ms. Lansbury filmed. Jackie also used to name all her dolls after Angela Lansbury.
(Jackie, thank you for being a good sport and confessing this to us. You have provided us all with a little joy today.)

B) Celia, who loved Jason, the red Power Ranger. Times like these I am thankful I didn’t have a brother. Nobody made me watch Power Rangers.

C) Two people had crushes on Rafael, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. One of them is Jen and the other is my dear old friend Kristin, who defended and hypothesized on her love of Rafael:
“It isn’t my fault I had a weakness for the vulnerable and injured bad-boy. He was the turtle that got hurt and was alienated from his other anthropomorphized animal friends. In fact, here is brief synopsis of Rafael’s character, per wikipedia: ‘The team’s anti-social bad boy, Raphael has an aggressive nature and seldom hesitates to throw the first punch. He is an intense fighter. His personality can be alternately fierce and sarcastic. He is intensely loyal to his brothers and sensei.’ I hate to say it but this sort of, unfortunately, sounds like the type of guy lots of girls fall for when they are young, before they realize that nice guys are actually the way to go.”
There is a reason Kristin is getting her Doctorate this year. That girl is smart and always thinking like a professor!

D) Laurel, who had a crush on the cartoon Disney Robin Hood. The bleeding heart liberal in me (and also the fact that Laurel and I are long lost twins) can relate to this one. But still?! A cartoon fox.

Which one is your favorite?

Oh, I totally had a crush on Demitri from Anastasia forever. So hot

I’m delurking because this one is too good. I TOTALLY see the appeal of Robin Hood, I had a crush on him too. Even the lanky-type physique is what I go for in actual human guys.

I totally forgot about cartoon Robin Hood. There’s a reason he was a fox!

Wow, I completely forgot about my major crush on the little red fox. Is that weird? I also had a crush on Casper the ghost. Remember Casper? And at the end he turned into major hottie Devon Sawa? Forgot about that one too. And then there was the movie Hocus Pocus and Binx the cat? He morphed into a good lookin’ kid too. So I was smitten with the talking black cat the entire movie. I remember my mom asking me if I had a crush on the main actor kid and I replied with “No, I liked the cat.” Ha!

I failed the quiz entirely because I thought it was about who YOU had a crush on. It’s called “Mon-esia” okay?
I liked JTT. Much like my first kiss, he turned out to be gay. Sigh.

How could I have forgotten about JTT and Jonathan Brandis? But Rafael was my first celebrity crush, and Kristin nailed it. I sure hope she’s getting her doctorate in some sort of psychotherapy, because I’m in the market for a new shrink. Does she do internet sessions?

Angela Lansbury is SO my favorite. My mother always loved Murder She Wrote, and she still watches all the reruns. Jessica Fletcher is such a trip!

Yes! I am so glad that Larissa understands my love for cartoon Robin Hood.
I made up an entire song about how Fox Robin Hood should NOT marry Fox Maid Marian and choose me instead.
I can see the appeal of Power Rangers and TMNT as well. They fight evil!
Angela Lansbury, however… that is priceless and gets my vote.

I guess I was an asexual little girl because I didn’t have my first real celebrity crush until I was a teenager. It was Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N. Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, which is pretty strange and irrational, but certainly no Angela Lansbury!

What?! How did I miss this test! Boo! Hiss!
That being said; I may or may not agree with Laurel…what? He saves Maid Marian AND gives poor people money AND he sings AND he plays with little bunnies…or something. Robin Hood is totally hawt.

My irrational crushes (besides foxy Robin Hood) were Fonzi and the guy from CHiPS. Ya. As a four year old, I liked dark, hirstute men. Hmmm.

Laurel wins, hands down, because that fox is H-O-T-T! Although the Angela Lansbury crush is ALMOST as good. I really liked the lady when I was a kid, too. But ultimately my vote went to Laurel because her cartoon fox crush reminded me that I, too, had a MAJOR cartoon crush as a tween and teen: Trent, on Daria. Oh. My. Gosh. That boy was a total hottie. I loved him so much I put a bumper sticker with his face on it on my first car.
