choices
May 16th, 2008 @ 12:51 am | life | Post a CommentTonight we have a choice of two things we could talk about. The first thing is the fact that three days ago, I had a top-ranking US Army Special Forces soldier on my roof. But honestly, that story only gets more dull from there. (Trust me.)
Know what I’d rather talk about instead?
Are you ready?
I GOT A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know. I barely believe it myself. Can I say it again?
I GOT A NEW JOB!!!!!!!!
I don’t talk much about work because I’d rather not get dooced, but I think it’s safe to share this fabulous news with you. What are they going to do — Fire me? HAHAHAAAA.
I’m really a whole mess of emotions right now. It’s sort of impossible to tell the story from the very beginning without boring you to pieces, but the whirlwind really started last Friday afternoon when I got the offer.
Of course, I couldn’t just accept it right away. I had to get in super-hyper-analytical mode and solicit the opinions of everyone I know and a bunch of people I don’t know to make sure that I should take the job. Then I had to give myself four sleepless nights of thinking about how to best negotiate the offer, accept the offer, tell my boss, announce to my colleagues, and wrap up the last four years (!) of my professional life in the next two weeks.
So, yeah, I’ve been busy. And anxious. And nervous. And emotional. And scared. And really effing happy, too.
I’m going to keep mum about what my new job is, but I will say that I am moving into a consulting role, which is something I’ve never done before, and that I’ll still be working in the non-profit sector. It’s really a perfect fit, on paper at least. I hope that I love it this much once I actually start. I have to remember that it’s still a JOB. It’s not laying on a beach with a private butler handing me fresh margaritas every hour. But I should make just enough more money to be able to afford a vacation that includes margaritas…
Life is about choices, and I am choosing to stop sitting back in my comfy chair in my safe job with my nice coworkers. I’m choosing to begin a whole new adventure.
I just have one little question though: Is it too early to ask if they have a no-denim clause in their dress code?

Oh, Janet!! That is absolutely fantastic news!!! Congratulations, and I hope the job is everything you expect and more!

HOORAY! Congratulations! I am so excited for you and glad that you have this new opportunity after such a long job hunt. But seriously, wearing jeans to work would totally sweeten the deal.
Do you get to take any time off between gigs? That was key for me.
Congrats again! Eee!

Girrrrrrrl, that’s really great news. OUTSTANDING! I have no doubt you knocked their socks off. And I’m also quite certain you will be leaving a difficult hole to fill in your old job. As a fellow consultant (in a very different industry), welcome! Let me know if you have any questions about the wild ride. In the meantime, go out and celebrate this weekend. It’s well deserved!

My train of thought on the way to work this morning: Man, I need a new job. I need to get on that. Seriously, like TODAY. I wonder if I’m the only person on earth stuck in this it’s-bad-but-not-THAT-bad semi-seriously job hunt. Didn’t Janet have a secret interview a long time ago? I guess that didn’t work out. Or maybe it did? She couldn’t have gotten a new job and not even mentioned it, could she? No. Could she? I should ask.
Clearly, I have ESP. CONGRATS!!!! That is so great/exciting/scary/wonderful. HOORAY!

I hope that your new job leads you to great professional happiness (and I’m sorry that sounded so corny, but it was sincere!LOL) I’m currently struggling with wether to leave my comfy/easy job for something new in an industry which I would enjoy more, so I hope that I can follow in your footsteps and get a move on! Congratulations on the new job! I know you’ll be fabulous, but it can be a little scary leaving behind something you’ve done for four years.
The denim question is fair game. I went from an office with a casual (jeans) Friday policy to one where I can only wear jeans on the third Friday of every month. I may be forgetful, but I always manage to remember Jeans Day.
But for more money I might forgo jeans forever.

Congratulations! Consulting should be a fun gig for you, and it sounds like you’re REALLY ready to get into it.
Oh, and you should definitely ask about the Denim Clause. Dress code is important, no matter how sweet the job!

How freaking awesome is this? Congrats, my dear! What an exciting new adventure…I’m proud of you for making such a big step. I think that most people I know are in their “comfy” jobs (myself included) and are too nervous to go out and see if there is something better out there.
I’m so excited for you - best of luck!
(On a sidenote, I’m apparently still holding out for the job with the hourly margaritas. Seriously.)
